Notes: [Auszug] A second phenomenon observed was the apparent bodily displacement (or 'crawling') of lead crystallites by distances comparable with their length. Small movements of the centre of mass of crystallites due to a change of shape have been noted by other workers5 and have also been observed in the ...

Notes: Summary. Hydatid disease of the female pelvis is rare in gynaecological practice. In Libya, where the disease is endemic, 14 women with pelvic hydatid disease were encountered in one hospital department between 1971 and 1979. Five of these women were pregnant, a hospital prevalence of 1 in 20000. The other nine women accounted for 0.3% of all gynaecological laparotomies in the same hospital. The clinical features, diagnosis and management of this rare condition are described.

Notes: Weekly changes in the gonadosomatic index (IG) of male golden rabbitfish Siganus guttatus showed two peaks corresponding with the new moons in June and July. The testes developed synchronously toward the first lunar quarter in June and July. After the second spawning, the sperm duct and the seminiferous tubules were occupied by residual spermatozoa and spermatogonia, respectively. Weekly changes of plasma testosterone, 11-ketotestosterone and 17,20β-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one coincided with those of testicular activity. They reached their peaks 1 week before spawning coinciding with the peaks of IG and testicular development. These cyclical changes in plasma steroid hormones suggest that lunar periodicity is a major factor that synchronizes testicular activity of S. guttatus.

Notes: Testosterone, 11-ketotestosterone and 17α ,20β-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one in the forktail rabbitfish Siganus argenteus peaked around the full moon and the last quarter moon, respectively. Since changes in these hormones were correlated with histological change in the testis, the present study provided conclusive evidence for importance of the lunar periodicity in the reproductive activity of the forktail rabbitfish.

Notes: Abstract Six extraction methods for the analysis of PCBs (CB-28, CB-52, CB-101, CB-118, CB-138, CB-153 and CB-180) in sewage sludge were tested. A certified reference material (CRM 392) was used for the evaluation of the performance of the methods. Soxhlet-Dean-Starch with toluene as solvent, Soxhlet with hexane:acetone (2:3), cold digestion/saponification with 2 mol/L KOH in methanol followed by partition with hexane, and sonicated liquid-solid extraction with hexane:acetone (1:1) produced accurate results (97%, 93%, 104%, and 88%, respectively) with acceptable precisions (6.2%, 6.8%, 15% and 12%, respectively). Results in close agreement with the certified value for all congeners were obtained by treatment with BF3-methanol prior to partition with dichloromethane. However, this is a tedious procedure and involves the use of hazardous compounds. Cyclic steam distillation produced results with an accuracy of around 80% and a good precision (5.2%). The very low consumption of solvents and other expensive chemicals by this technique and the possibility of analyzing the extract directly without clean-up make it an interesting alternative to the more sophisticated methods. Column elution with dichloromethane was found to be less efficient (61%), but it is a rapid, direct method with a low consumption of solvents and it may therefore serve as screening method.

Notes: Abstract Exposure to pesticides is a serious environmental problem, since a realm of uncertainty exists concerning the toxic effects on man. Due to economical and more efficacious reasons, pesticides are being used in combination. The use of pesticides in combination, especially carbaryl and malathion, has become increasingly prevalent in recent years. Carbaryl and maiathion in combination are known to distribute to the rat liver and kidney to a greater extent than when exposure is limited to either pesticide alone. Since, carbaryl or malathion as individual pesticides are known to react with glutathione (GSH) during their metabolism and alterations in rat blood and liver GSH content after subacute exposure to this combination were noted in earlier work from this laboratory, it is important to examine the glutathione related parameters in the rat liver and kidneyin vitro. Concentrations of 2 and 4 mM carbaryl and/or malathion were incubated with rat whole blood, liver and kidney homogenate and 10,000 × g supernatant to observe the effect of blood and liver glutathione (GSH) content, liver glutathione S-alkyl-transferase (GSAT) activity and liver and kidney γ-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGTP) levels. Liver homogenate GSH content significantly decreased with the increase in exposure time to carbaryl and/ or malathion, while blood GSH levels remained un-changed. Exposure of the liver GSAT enzyme with malathion and carbaryl/malathion in combination produced a two-fold increase in the enzyme's activity. Kidney GGTP activity was inhibited by carbaryl and/or malathion, while the activity in the liver was without change.

Notes: Abstract Trichloroethylene (TCE) hepatotoxicity is controversial. The present study was designed to investigate the mechanism of TCE hepatotoxicity. The toxicity of equimolar concentrations (5.7 mM) of TCE and its two major metabolites, trichloro-acetic acid (TCA) and trichloroethanol (TCL), was determined. TCE cell viability was dose- and time-dependent. Enzyme leakage correlated with decrease in cell viability; significantly increased leakage started at 1.9 mM treatment. 5.7 mM TCA or TCL was not toxic compared with the same dose of TCE. Hepatocytes isolated from phenobarbital pretreated rats exhibited no significant alteration in toxicity parameters when exposed to 1.9 and 5.7 mM concentrations of TCE. While the phenobarbital pretreatment increased the rate of metabolism of TCE. The present study suggests that TCE toxicity occurs before the formation of TCA and TCL.
