    Notizen: The Okiep Copper District, part of the 1.2–1.0 Ga high-grade terrane in western Namaqualand, is composed of a mid-Proterozoic supracrustal sequence and several pre- to post-orogenic intrusive suites affected by two high-grade events (M2a/M2b, M3) of Kibaran and one low-grade event (M4) of Pan-African age. Peak assemblages in quartz-bearing pelites are characterized either by garnet+cordierite coexisting with sillimanite/biotite, or by biotite+sillimanite±garnet; a difference controlled by bulk composition and variation in water activities (0.1–0.7) during dehydration melting. Maximum P–T conditions were reached during M2a coevally with the major deformational event (D2a) and are estimated at 750–820 °C and 5–6 kbar. A counterclockwise P–T  path is indicated by regionally occurring pseudomorphs of sillimanite after andalusite and by prograde reaction textures preserved as relics in M2a porphyroblasts. Two stages of retrograde metamorphism are distinguished: M2a garnet+cordierite-bearing assemblages were retrogressed to biotite+sillimanite+quartz (M2b) along discontinuous foliation planes and shear zones (D2b). Retrograde M3 corona assemblages formed at similar P–T  conditions (580–660 °C and 5.8±0.5 kbar) to the M2b assemblages but M3 crystallization postdates penetrative D2 deformation, intrusion of 1.06 Ga granitoids and formation of associated W–Mo deposits. It is concluded that: (a) Kibaran high-grade metamorphism in the Okiep Copper District is thermally punctuated and (b) reaction textures documenting apparent isobaric cooling of this low-P high-T  terrane must be interpreted with caution.

    Notizen: A sequence of psammitic and pelitic metasedimentary rocks from the Mopunga Range region of the Arunta Inlier, central Australia, preserves evidence for unusually low pressure (c. 3 kbar), regional-scale, upper amphibolite and granulite facies metamorphism and partial melting. Upper amphibolite facies metapelites of the Cackleberry Metamorphics are characterised by cordierite-andalusite-K-feldspar assemblages and cordierite-bearing leucosomes with biotite-andalusite selvages, reflecting P–T conditions of c. 3 kbar and c. 650–680 °C. Late development of a sillimanite fabric is interpreted to reflect either an anticlockwise P–T evolution, or a later independent higher-P thermal event. Coexistence of andalusite with sillimanite in these rocks appears to reflect the sluggish kinematics of the Al2SiO5 polymorphic inversion. In the Deep Bore Metamorphics, 20 km to the east, dehydration melting reactions in granulite facies metapelites have produced migmatites with quartz-absent sillimanite-spinel-cordierite melanosomes, whilst in semipelitic migmatites, discontinuous leucosomes enclose cordierite-spinel intergrowths. Metapsammitic rocks are not migmatised, and contain garnet–orthopyroxene–cordierite–biotite–quartz assemblages. Reaction textures in the Deep Bore Metamorphics are consistent with a near-isobaric heating-cooling path, with peak metamorphism occurring at 2.6–4.0 kbar and c. 750–800 °C. SHRIMP U–Pb dating of metamorphic zircon rims in a cordierite-orthopyroxene migmatite from the Deep Bore Metamorphics yielded an age of 1730 ± 7 Ma, whilst detrital zircon cores define a homogeneous population at 1805 ± 7 Ma. The 1730 Ma age is interpreted to reflect the timing of high-T, low-P metamorphism, synchronous with the regional Late Strangways Event, whereas the 1805 Ma age provides a maximum age of deposition for the sedimentary precursor. The Mopunga Range region forms part of a more extensive low-pressure metamorphic terrane in which lateral temperature gradients are likely to have been induced by localised advection of heat by granitic and mafic intrusions. The near-isobaric Palaeoproterozoic P–T–t evolution of the Mopunga Range region is consistent with a relatively transient thermal event, due to advective processes that occurred synchronous with the regional Late Strangways tectonothermal event.

These granitoids represent strongly fractionated calc-alkaline I-type magmas with minor S-type components and reveal post-orogenic affinities. Molybdenum contents (average 4.3 ppm) are slightly above the general background of average granites. Molybdenite mineralization is restricted to narrow quartz veins and quartz vein selvages which are presently composed of biotite and (almandine-grossular) garnet. These selvages show geochemical features typical of intermediate argillic alteration in a hydrothermal system postdating granite intrusion: instability of plagioclase causes removal of Na, Ba, Sr, Pb and Eu, while K and Ca remain nearly constant. Rare earth elements (apart from Eu) and metals are extremely enriched. Application of Fe-Mg exchange (garnet-biotite) and oxygen isotope (quartz-garnet, quartz-plagioclase) geothermometers to vein selvage mineral assemblages reveals temperatures of the late-Alpine (35–55 Ma) metamorphic overprint (∼540 °C, 7–10 kbar). Leucocratic rocks composed of mainly orthoclase and plagioclase are occasionally spatially related to molybdenite-bearing veins; they are interpreted as episyenites formed by hydrothermal alteration of the host granite. This episyenitic alteration is characterized by a mass loss of ca. 30%, relative enrichment of plagioclase components, extreme depletion of Si, and minor depletion of Fe, Zn, Cu and Mo.

    Notizen: Abstract Both stratiform/stratabound and granite-related models have been used to explain the genesis of W(Mo) deposits in the Okiep copper district in western Namaqualand, South Africa. Apparently, stratabound mineralization (Fe-rich wolframite with accessory molybdenite) occurs in foliation-parallel quartz veins in high-grade (∼750 °C, 5–6 kbar) metapelites of the Wolfram Formation, and less commonly in small bodies of silicified leucogranites and pegmatites. Six Re–Os ages for molybdenites from four deposits (Nababeep Tungsten Far West, Kliphoog, Narrap, Tweedam) range between 1000 ± 4 and 1026 ± 5 Ma. These molybdenites define a well-constrained 187Re–187Os isochron with an age of 1019 ± 6 Ma, which is interpreted as the age of W(Mo) mineralization. This age is significantly younger than Proterozoic protolith ages for supracrustal rocks and the emplacement ages for the main intrusive suites, but geologic evidence requires overlap with a period of high-grade metamorphism. We suggest that W(Mo) mineralization is genetically linked to intra-crustal magmatic processes at ∼1020 Ma, thereby precluding the ∼1060 Ma Concordia granite as the source for mineralizing fluids. A narrow range of positive δ34S compositions (+3.6 to +4.5‰) for eight molybdenites from five W(Mo) mines is consistent with a SO2-rich fluid and a granite-related genetic model. Post-peak metamorphic deformation and metamorphism of W(Mo) ores is most likely related to the retrograde stage of the Namaquan orogeny, which overlaps emplacement of late-orogenic, evolved granites and pegmatites, and the formation of W(Mo) deposits in western Namaqualand. Therefore, the effects of retrograde Namaquan metamorphism extend at least to ∼1020 Ma or, alternatively, these W(Mo) veins were affected by a poorly constrained later event (e.g. early Pan-African).

    Notizen: Abstract Stratabound tungsten mineralization in regional metamorphic calc-silicate rocks of probably Lower Paleozoic age is described from the polymetamorphic Austroalpine Crystalline Complex (ACC) of the Eastern Alps. Scheelite-bearing calc-silicate rocks which are often associated with marbles and tourmalinites are intercalated conformably with metaclastic rocks. Alkalipoor calc-silicate rocks with high amounts of clinozoisite/ zoisite, grossular, quartz, plagioclase, etc. are the most important host rocks for tungsten mineralization. These unusual calc-silicate rocks are products of regional metaorphism and are interpreted as reaction skarns. They have formed in the presence of a water-dominated fluid phase with very low XCO2.In the Koralpe estimated P-T conditions are 650–700 °C at 5–7 kb. The mineralogical composition and the mineral zoning of the calc-silicate rocks is controlled by the degree of the Hercynian and Eoalpine metamorphism. There are no signs of graniteelated skarn formation. Tungsten preconcentration is thought to be syngenetic/syndiagenetic. It is genetically linked to exhalative hydrothermal processes in other Lower Paleozoic terrains of the Eastern Alps.
