Abstract Stresses generated due to contact between an ideally rough butflat surface and a smooth cylinder are calculated using complexvariable analysis. At low normal loads there are two possibleresponses, (i) the asperity is plastic when the subsurface iselastic and (ii) the asperity is elastic and the subsurface isplastic. It is found that it is possible to evoke a desired response by manipulating surface geometry and load.
