Notes: Abstract The stress concentration that occurs when load is diffused from a constant stress member into thin sheet is an important problem in the design of light weight structures. By using solutions in biharmonic polar-trigonometric series, the stress concentration can be effectively isolated so that highly accurate information necessary for design can be obtained. A method of analysis yielding high accuracy with limited effort is presented for rectangular panels with transverse edges free or supported by inextensional end ribs. Numerical data are given for panels with length twice the width.

Description / Table of Contents: Résumé On a solutionné les modifications des contraintes an voisinage de l'extremite d'une fissure axiale dans un récipient cylindríque sournis à pression.
Notes: Abstract Perturbation solutions are obtained for stresses around the tip of an axial crack in a pressurized circular cylindrical shell. The analysis, using a differential equation approach, involves perturbation in a curvature parameter relating crack length to shell diameter and thickness. The results are valid for cracks of small length and agree completely with those obtained earlier by Folias by the method of integral equations.

Notes: In this paper finite element method for natural vibration problems, based on a modified Rayleigh-Ritz method is presented. Numerical results of a few simple examples indicate that the method is promising.

Notes: Abstract Interference fits are used extensively in aircraft structural joints because of their improved fatigue performance. Recent advances in analysis of these joints have increased understanding of the nonlinear load-contact and load-interfacial slip variations in these joints. Experimental work in these problems is lacking due to difficulties in determining partial contact and partial slip along the pin-hole interface. In this paper, an experimental procedure is enumerated for determining load-contact relations in interference/clearance fits, using photoelastic models and applying a technique for detecting progress of separation/contact up to predetermined locations. The study incorporates a detailed procedure for model making, controlling interference, locating break of contact up to known locations around the interface, estimating optically the degree of interference, determining interfacial friction and evaluating stresses in the sheet. Experiments, simulating joints in large sheets, were carried out under both pin and plate loads. The present studies provide load-separation behavior in interference joint with finite interfacial friction.

Notes: An important limitation of finite element analysis, namely, the need for a large number of small elements in regions of finite or infinite stress concentrations and the difficulties of convergence in such cases, is well known. Rao1 suggested a possibility of overcoming this by developing hybrid techniques combining continuum and finite element concepts. In such techniques, each region of stress concentration is covered by one large ‘primary element’ whose description includes term(s) identifying the type and order of concentration, while the remaining structure is split into a few ‘secondary elements’ which are conventional finite elements. In this paper a procedure incorporating this concept is developed and its effectiveness is clearly demonstrated by successful application to two important examples, one of them with stress singularities. The concept, in fact, can be applied equally well to other two- and three-dimensional problems of continua with discontinuities and concentrations.

Notes: Three sector elements, two for plane stress problems (PSL and PSN) and one for plate bending problems (BSN), have been developed. Of the three elements, two are based on the natural mode technique. The elements have been applied to typical problems to test their performance.
