Notes: Abstract The exchange between bromamine-T and radioactive bromide has been carried out in various media. The exchange is maximum at pH=2 and decreases in strong as well as weak acid media. No exchange occurs in alkaline medium. The optimum conditions for the preparation of radiobromamine-T with high specific activity are reported.

Notes: Abstract The kinetics of chlorine isotope exchange between chloramine-B /CAB/ and chloride has been studied using ion-exchange separation and tracer technique. McKay's plot are linear. The exchange reaction is fast in acidic medium, very slow in neutral medium and does not take place in alkaline medium. In the acidic range the exchange is maximum at pH 3.3. The rate of exchange decreases at pH 〉3.3 and 〈3.3. The order with respect to CAB and chloride is unity. The order with respect to [H+] is unity at pH〉5. Addition of neutral salt or parent compound has no effect on the rate of exchange. Activation energy and activation entropy for this exchange reaction have been calculated.

Notes: Abstract Hydrogen sulphide at trace level can be determined by radiorelease technique using radiochloramine-T. The minimum detection level is 0.25 ppm. Zinc acetate is used to fix H2S from air samples. CS2 does not interfere. Interference by SO2 can be eliminated by oxidizing it with H2O2.

Notes: Abstract Chemisorbed oxygen can be determined quantitatively by the measurement of gaseous N2/N2O liberated by treatment with hydrazine sulphate/hydroxylamine hydrochloride. The amount of chemisorbed oxygen depends on the degree of dispersion during irradiation and also the γ-dose. The chemisorption is enhanced in the presence of moisture. The partial reduction of the transition metal ion favours the formation of chemisorbed oxygen.

Notes: Abstract Catalysis of mixed oxide LaMnO3 was studied for the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The catalyst was γ-irradiated in open petri dishes, vacuum, dry oxygen and moist oxygen. LaMnO3 irradiated in moist oxygen showed highest catalytic activity. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) studies were carried out to investigate the surface modifications occurred during γ-irradiaiton of LaMnO3. No significant change in the surface was noticed in LaMnO3 irradiated in vacuum and dry oxygen. However, LaMnO3 irradiated in moist oxygen and in open petri dishes showed the reduction of transition metal (MN3+ to Mn2+) which in turn leads to the formation of chemisorbed superoxide ions (O 2 − ) and surface carbonate species (CO 3 2− ). The latter processes decreases the electrical conductivity by trapping the charge carriers. The hydrated electron generated by the radiolysis of moisture reduces the transition metal. A qualitative molecular orbital model has been proposed for the chemisorption of O 2 − on the reduced transition metal centers (Mn2+).

Notes: Abstract The extent of exchange of bromine-82 with bromamine-T in strong acid medium is low due to the formation of $$R\mathop N\limits^ + H_2 Br$$ at lower acid concentrations and bromine at higher acidities. $$R\mathop N\limits^ + H_2 Br$$ formation occurs over a narrow acid concentration range and is less stable than $$R\mathop N\limits^ + H_2 Cl$$ .

Notes: Abstract Aqueous chloramine-B /C6H5SO2NCl Na/ solution is known to contain species like RNCl−, RNHCl, RNCl2, RN+H2Cl, HOCl and H2+OCl where R=C6H5SO2. The exchange studies between36Cl and CAB carried out in various media by ion-exchange method indicated that there is no exchange in solution at pH≥7. As the pH is decreased below 7, the extent of exchange increases reaching a maximum at pH 3. 3. The exchange decreases as the acidity is increased between pH 3.3 and 1N and again the exchange increases beyong 1N. The observed increase in exchange in strong acid medium is due to the evolution of chlorine.

Notes: Abstract The catalytic activity of La2CuO4 for the decomposition of H2O2 was studied in detail. La2CuO4 was prepared by the ceramic method in four different ways. Gamma irradiation of the La2CuO4 samples increased their catalytic activity irrespective of the method of preparation. The enhanced catalytic activity is attributed to irradiation generated Cu+ centres on the surface of the catalyst.

Notes: Abstract A new method for the continuous determination of H2O2 is described based on the catalytic decomposition of H2O2 by LaCoO3. Oxygen liberated is measured by a gas meauuring burette. γ-irradiated catalyst enhances the catalytic activity and decreases the time required for complete decomposition. The procedure is suitable for microdetermination of H2O2 in various food products.

Notes: Abstract Oxidation of cyclohexanol free from peroxide by carbon tetrachloride under the influence of gamma radiation was carried out both for air saturated and deareated systems. Large values for the formation of HCl are obtained. A kinetic expression consistent with experimental observations has been derived.
