Notizen: Abstract This paper reports on the development of an efficient and accurate means for the direct computation of crack surface weight functions for two dimensional fracture mechanics analysis. Weight functions are mathematical representations which can be used to efficiently calculate stress intensity factors for a variety of crack loading and boundary conditions. The method is inherently capable of handling mixed-mode problems. The weight function capability is especially important for problems of fatigue crack growth modeling where the efficient calculation of stress intensity factors is crucial. The basis of the new formulation and numerical solution method is the boundary element method (BEM), as implemented for two dimensional fracture mechanics analysis. The paper will review the analytical formulation of the new BEM, the numerical solution algorithm, and a limited number of validation examples.

Notizen: An advanced formulation of the boundary element method has been developed for inelastic analysis based on an initial stress approach. The iterative solution algorithm makes use of an accelerated initial stress approach in which the past history of initial stresses are used to obtain an initial estimate for the current increment. In the present analysis the geometry and functions are represented by higher order (quadratic) shape functions to model complex geometries and rapid functional variations accurately. The methods of numerical integration of the kernels, particularly the singular type, are substantially improved by devising suitable automatic sub-segmentation routines that incorporate the recent developments in mapping procedures. The formulations have been implemented for two-dimensional plane stress, plane strain and three-dimensional elasto-plasticity problems.

Notizen: The boundary element formulation for acoustic eigenfrequency analysis based on treating the forcing function, in the governing differential equation, as an initially unknown distributed source within the domain is presented. The volume integral due to this distributed source is eliminated by approximating the internal source by global interpolation and polynomial function representations and finding particular solutions for the governing, inhomogeneous equations. The resulting non-symmetric system matrix is solved by using Arnoldi's algorithm, modified to take advantage of the special structure of the substructured boundary element method. The techniques described here are embedded in a computer program GPBEST, and the numerical results are obtained by using this computer code.

Notizen: The stress intensity factors for cracks in three-dimensional, thermally stressed structures are computed by using the boundary element method. While many boundary and volume-integral-based formulations are available for the treatment of thermoelastic problems in solids, the present analysis is based on a recently developed boundary-only formulation. The accuracy of the solutions in the present work is improved by using special elements at the crack front that accurately model the variation of displacement, temperature fields and singularity of traction, flux fields.
