Notes: Summary The observed nonuniversal critical behaviour of some micellar solutions is interpreted in terms of quasi-marginalism,i.e. the presence of a coupling which scales with an exponent very close to the spatial dimensionality. This can give rise to a preasymptotic region with varying effective critical exponents with a final crossover to the Ising ones. The reduced crossover temperature is estimated to be below 10−6. The exponents β and γ measured in C12E5 are in good agreement with the scaling law expected to hold for the effective exponents. The model considered by Shnidman is found unable to explain the nonuniversal critical behaviour.

Notes: Summary A theory for the build-up of long-range correlations in fluids is developed. When it is supported by a realistic description of the short-range structure, based on the optimized random phase approximation, it shows the typical accuracy of a good liquid-state theory far from the critical point together with a genuine nonclassical critical behaviour. In this way we obtain a comprehensive theory of fluids in which both universal and nonuniversal quantities can be studied for a realistic model of a liquid. The case of the Lennard-Jones interaction is analyzed in detail above the critical temperature and is compared to experiments and numerical simulations.

Notes: Summary The critical behaviour of a class of Ornstein-Zernike systems,i.e. systems in which the direct correlation function has the range of the potential, is studied for a lattice gas with nearest-neighbour interaction. The generic critical behaviour is equal to that of the mean spherical model. The Percus-Yevick equation falls in a special class due to the vanishing of a suitable expansion coefficient at the critical point. This special class has classical (mean field) critical exponents but a non-classical and nonuniversal scaling function.

Notes: Summary The modified hypernetted-chain equation is used to study the ground state of Bose fluids in the Jastrow approximation. We test the equation for different forms of the pair interaction and of the Jastrow pseudopotential and in all cases the energy of4He is given with an error not larger than 0.1 K at all densities. The effect of a triplet term in the wavefunction is also studied.

Notes: The entropy of mixing of a binary mixture of hard spheres at constant pressure is computed as a function of the diameter ratio on the basis of the Mansoori–Carnahan–Starling equation of state. The Flory–Huggins form for the entropy of mixing is a poor approximation and becomes worse for increasing values of the diameter ratio. The ideal gas form is closer to the hard sphere result.

Notes: The modified hypernetted chain and the crossover integral equations for the radial distribution function are generalized to take into account three-body forces. Good agreement with the simulation results is found. The structure factor and its isothermal density derivative for krypton and argon are computed with a realistic two-body potential plus the Axilrod–Teller three-body interaction. For krypton at medium density a very good agreement with experiment if found. At higher densities we find significant deviations both for krypton and for argon. The effect of three-body forces becomes very significant when the two-body potential has a narrow attractive well as it is the case in micellar solutions or microemulsions. In particular the critical point can be shifted to a very low value of concentration and there is enhancement of concentration fluctuations for a given value of the correlation length.

Notes: The mean spherical approximation (MSA) is found inadequate in the presence of attraction between particles which is strong and of short range compared with the hard core diameter. This is a situation prevalent in applications of liquid state theory to micellar solutions and microemulsions. A generalized MSA is also studied in which conditions of thermodynamic consistency are implemented. The critical point is determined as function of the range of the attractive forces. We also discuss how the inadequacy of MSA affects the effective pair interaction deduced from experimental data for the structure factor.

Notes: We present the results of variational Monte Carlo calculations of clusters of 4He systems: We study the pure 4He case and the case of a cluster doped with a single alkali–ion impurity. The results are compared with similar calculations in bulk 4He. Our trial wave function is a glue-shadow wave function that can describe successfully self-binding and localization in space. The local Bose–Einstein condensate in the pure clusters is calculated. We give the results on the microscopic structure of the doped cluster in terms of the radial density profile around the ion and of angular correlations. We have studied the case of Na+ and K+. In both cases the local order of the atoms in the first shell around the ion is quite distinct compared to that present in the bulk liquid. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.
