    Notizen: Novel polybenzimidazoles containing thiaxanthone heterocyclic units were synthesised from 2,7-thiaxanthonedicarboxylic acid-5,5′-dioxide and 2,8-thiaxanthonedicarboxylic acid-5,5′-dioxide and two aromatic tetramine hydrochlorides by PPA solution polycondensation in 60-70% yield. Two model compounds, 2,7-bis(2-benzimidazolyl)thiaxanthone-5,5′-dioxide and 2,8-bis(2-benzimidazolyl)thiaxanthone-5,5′-dioxide, were prepared and characterized by spectral methods. The polybenzimidazoles have inherent viscosities in the range 1.13-1.50 dL/g and decomposition temperatures of 495-560°C. The effect of thiaxanthone units on polymer properties are discussed.

    Notizen: Novel polyamides containing heterocyclic thiaxanthone units were prepared by condensing 2,7-dichloroformylthiaxanthone-5,5′-dioxide and 2,8-dichloroformylthiaxanthone-5,5′-dioxide with various aromatic diamines, under low temperature solution polymerization conditions in DMAc. The model diamide, 2,8-ditolylcarbamylthiaxanthone-5,5′-dioxide was synthesised and characterized by spectroscopic methods. The polyamides were prepared in 70-80% yield and had inherent viscosity in the 0.36-0.73 dL/g range. The poyamides have decomposition temperatures in the 425-510°C range in nitrogen. The effect of thiaxanthone rings on polymer backbone on solubility, crystallinity, and thermal stability is also discussed.

    Notizen: Several poly(arylamino-quinone)s (PAAQs) were prepared by the conventional solution polymerization of p-benzoquinone with various aromatic diamines in tetrahydrofuran. Polymers prepared by this method were found to be more soluble in many organic solvents compared to the PAAQs prepared by other reported methods. The poly(arylamino-quinone)s were obtained in 82.3-94.5% yield and had inherent viscosities in the range of 0.073-0.251 dL/g. Among the PAAQs, the polymer prepared from p-benzoquinone and 1,3-bis(3-aminophenoxy)benzene (APB) had demonstrated exceptionally good solubility and thermal stability. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notizen: Several new cardopolyamides containing phenoxathiin-10,10-dioxide and phenoxaphosphine units were prepared by condensing 3,3-bis(4-aminophenyl)-phthalide (PDA), 9,9-bis(4-aminophenyl) fluorene (FDA), and 9,9-bis(4-aminophenyl)-10-anthrone (ADA) with 2,8-dichloroformylphenoxathiin-10,10-dioxide (PDC) and 2,8-dichloroformyl-10-phenylphenoxaphosphine-10-oxide (PPDC) in DMAc. A low temperature solution polycondensation technique was employed throughout. The cardopolymides were obtained in 80-92% yield and showed inherent viscosities in the range 0.41-0.6 dL/g. All the polymers were characterized by IR spectra, density, solubility, crystallinity, and thermal analysis.

    Notizen: Several polyesters containing thiaxanthone rings were prepared from 2,7-dichloroformylthiaxanthone-5,5′-dioxide (IVa), 2,8-dichloroformylthiaxanthone-5,5′-dioxide (IVb), and bisphenols by solution polycondensation. The 2,8-diethoxycarbonylthiaxanthone-5,5′-dioxide (V) was prepared and characterized by spectral methods to confirm the formation of 2,8-thiaxanthonedicarboxylic acid-5,5′-dioxide (IVb). Prior to polymer synthesis two model compounds,2,7-diphenoxycarbonylthiaxanthone-5,5′-dioxide (MDE-1) and 2,8-diphenoxycarbonylthiaxanthone-5,5′-dioxide (MDE-2), were synthesized and characterized by spectral methods. The polyesters were obtained in 62-78% yield and had inherent viscosities in the range 0.42-0.90 dL/g. The effect of thiaxanthone rings on solubility, crystallinity, and thermal stability of the polyesters are also discussed. The polyesters have decomposition temperatures in the range 372-438°C.

    Notizen: Aromatic-aliphatic polyamides containing phenoxathiin and thianthrene heterocyclic units were prepared by the direct polycondensation of 2,8-phenoxathiin-bis(γ-ketobutyric acid) (I) or 2,7-thianthrene-bis(γ-ketobutyric acid) (II) with various aromatic diamines in a triphenylphosphite-pyridine system. Prior to polymer synthesis two model diamides were prepared by condensing γ-keto acid I or II with p-toluidine. The model diamides and polyamides were characterized by spectral methods and elemental analysis. The polyamides, obtained in 56-90% yields, had inherent viscosities in the 0.82-1.1 dL/g range in concentrated H2SO4 at 30°C. The effect of heterocyclic units on polymer properties, such as solubility, crystallinity, and thermal stability has been discussed.

    Notizen: In order to study the effect of the presence of phenyl groups in poly (amino-quinone) (PAQ) polymers, several novel poly(amino-2-phenylbenzoquinone) (PhPAQ) polymers have been prepared from 2-phenylbenzoquinone and aliphatic diamines, such as 1,6-diaminohexane, 1,8-diaminooctane, 1,12-diaminodod+++++, and 1,4-diaminocyclohexane. Prior to the polymerization, 2-phenylbenzoquinone was generated in situ from 2-phenylhydroquinone in the presence of calcium hypochlorite as the oxidizing agent in dichloromethane. All of the polymers synthesized have been characterized with respect to their corresponding model compounds. It was also found that unlike their analogous PAQ polymers, PhPAQ polymers were highly soluble in many common organic solvents because of the presence of phenyl groups in their polymer backbone. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notizen: Novel poly(amino-quinone)s were quantitatively prepared from in situ produced 2-methylbenzoquinone and 2-phenylbenzoquinone with Jeffamine D-400® in the presence of calcium hypochlorite as the oxidizing agent. These polymers were readily soluble in most of the organic solvents such as ethanol, acetone, tetrahydrofuran, chloroform, N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), and N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc). The coatings prepared from these polymers showed very good adhesion to metals, hardness, and flexibility even after curing at 110°C for 5 h. Particularly, coatings formulated with epoxy-novalac resin D.E.N-438 showed excellent corrosion resistance in artificial sea water and did not form any blisters. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
