Notes: Potato chips were coated with 5 seasonings: cocoa, barbecue (BBQ), nacho cheese (NC), sour cream and onion (SCO) and salt and vinegar (SV). The evenness of the seasoning on each chip was measured by colorimetry, image analysis and sensory evaluation. Regression analysis was used to determine which parameters measured by colorimetry and image analysis best correlated to sensory evaluation for each seasoning. For colorimetry, the parameters with the strongest correlation to sensory ratings were the SD of L for cocoa and BBQ, a for NC and b for SCO seasonings. No single parameter correlated significantly for SV. The best correlation for the image analysis method was the percentage of chip covered for BBQ and NC, and the RSD of the percentage of chip covered for cocoa, SCO and SV. Both colorimetry and image analysis are fast, accurate analytical alternatives to sensory evaluation for determining coating evenness.

Notes: ABSTRACT Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune demyelinating disease of the central nervous system. A complex genetic etiology is thought to underlie susceptibility to this disease. The present study was designed to analyze whether differences in genes that encode myelin proteins influence susceptibility to MS. We performed linkage analysis of MS to markers in chromosomal regions that include the genes encoding myelin basic protein (MBP), proteolipid protein (PLP), myelin-associated glycoprotein (MAG), oligodendrocyte myelin glycoprotein (OMGP), and myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) in a well-characterized population of 65 multiplex MS families consisting of 399 total individuals, 169 affected with MS and 102 affected sibpairs. Physical mapping data permitted placement of MAG and PLP genes on the Genethon genetic map; all other genes were mapped on the Genethon genetic map by linkage analysis. For each gene, at least one marker within the gene and/or two tightly linked flanking markers were analyzed. Marker data analysis employed a combination of genetic trait model-dependent (parametric) and model-independent linkage methods. Results indicate that MAG, MBP, OMGP, and PLP genes do not have a significant genetic effect on susceptibility to MS in this population. As MOG resides within the MHC, a potential role of the MOG gene could not be excluded.

Notes: [Auszug] Rigorous clinical criteria were employed to identify a set of families with multiple cases of MS (see Methods). In keeping with the variety of family structures seen in the general population, ascertainment was not restricted to a single family type, but included both sib-pairs and extended ...

Notes: Abstract A patient was diagnosed as having labyrinthitis and an intracranial brain tumor. At the time a very fine nodularity to the bronchopulmonary markings was noted on the chest roentgenogram. Subsequent follow up examination revealed diffuse nodular densities throughout both lung fields having the appearance of a miliary distribution. Antituberculous therapy was begun empirically, but the patient expired within three weeks. At autopsy multiple granulomas were found in the cerebrum, cerebellum and meninges. By culture and histologic examination, these were determined to contain Blastomyces dermatitidis. The lungs contained numerous small granulomata almost to the exclusion of native pulmonary architecture. Lesions were also seen in spleen, lymph nodes and pancreas.

Notes: Summary The residual normal wall segment of an eccentric stenosis of the coronary artery can reduce the residual lumen by spastic contraction of the media. Such dynamic coronary artery stenoses may consequently cause or intensify myocardial ischemia or may lead to sudden coronary death due to dysrhythmia. In 39 cases of sudden coronary death, the histological cross section of extramural coronary arteries were measured by planimetry after postmortem coronary angiography. Of a total of 382 stenoses with more than 45% narrowing, 178 (48.6%) were of the eccentric kind. These eccentric stenoses of the coronary artery were localized in the RIVA in 48%. On average, 4.5 eccentric stenoses were found in each case of coronary death. Eccentric stenoses with round (49.4%) or elliptically situated (35.3%) residual lumen were found mostly. The normal wall segment of all eccentric stenoses was on average 30.5% of the residual lumen wall. The quantitative findings show that the high percentage of eccentric stenoses with a larger normal wall segment is of functional significance with regard to acute coronary deficiency. The morphological description and evaluation of the coronary sclerosis should also take into consideration the kind of stenosis.

Notes: Summary Twenty-four yearling 11-month old Nellore steers initially weighing 180 kg were assigned to three treatments in a randomised complete block experiment lasting 392 days. Animals grazed continuously either Yaragua grass (Hyparrhenia rufa) or Yaragua/Stylo legume (Stylosanthes guianensis) and received the following treatments: A) Control, Yaragua plus common salt, B) Yaragua/Stylo plus common salt, and C) Yaragua/Stylo plus dicalcium phosphate/common salt (1:1). Mineral consumption in the three groups averaged 52 g per animal day−1. At 13 months daily liveweight gains/steer were 0.182, 0.409 and 0.483 kg for treatments of Yaragua, Yaragua/Stylo, and Yaragua/Stylo plus dicalcium phosphate/common salt mixture. Daily liveweight gains per ha were 0.488, 1.289, and 1.522 kg steer−1 for Yaragua, Yaragua/Stylo plus common salt and Yaragua/Stylo plus dicalcium phosphate/common salt. Steers receiving a legume (stylo) in the diet more than doubled weight gains (P〈0.05) compared to controls with dicalcium phosphate further (P〈0.05) increasing these gains.
