Notes: [Auszug] A 6.8-kilobase DNA fragment containing the sequence coding for the constant region of the mouse immunoglobulin γ1 heavy chain was cloned from total cellular DNA. Electron microscopic and nucleotide sequencing studies showed that the three protein domains and the hinge region are ...

Notes: The t haplotypes of mouse chromosome 17 bear a number of interesting mutations and rearrangements, some of which map close to the H-2 complex. Since there are many H-2 class I genes of unknown function, we have investigated their arrangement in t haplotypes using genomic Southern blots. We present a detailed chart of the H-2w30(tw12) complex, and compare it with the arrangement in other t haplotypes and standard mouse haplotypes. The chart shows duplications, deletions, and reshuffling of conserved and divergent regions. The two major features of the t arrangement-large deletions in the Qa and Tla regions–have analogues in some standard strains, so it is unlikely that these deletions are responsible for t-specific phenotypes. The differences between t and standard mouse strains are similar, in nature and in degree, to those between different standard strains.

Notes: [Auszug] SIR-In view of recent correspondence on deciphering primitive evolution from bumps on ribosomes, and in the light (or blackness?) of Professor Hoyle's theory that life originates in comets, is it significant that the nucleus of Halley's comet looks exactly like the small subunit of a ribosome? ...

Notes: [Auszug] The Qa-2,3 region of the H-2 complex contains numerous class I genes, defined by homology to the genes for known class I H-2 antigens11'13. At least 10 of them have been cloned from the BALB/c mouse11. Their functions are unknown, but most of them are apparently expressible in transfected L ...

Notes: Abstract The H-2 complex of the mouse contains numerous class I genes of unknown function. These genes are here classified into families according to homology in the exons encoding the variable domains. There are one major and at least five minor families, whose members are partly clustered and partly interspersed on the mouse chromosome. DNA sequences show that not only Tla and Qa-2 but also other minor-family genes have intact coding domains. These may be expressible genes of novel types.

Notes: Abstract We test implications of politicalcompetition theory concerning government size, usingdata from U.S. states. We find that greaterpolitical competition in the race for governor actsas a check against bigger government. Evidence onthe effectiveness of legal limits on expendituresand/or revenues growth is mixed. The DemocraticParty is associated with bigger government, but onlywhen party representation in both the governor'shouse and the legislature is strong. The flypapereffect of grants is found to be strong. Our resultshave implications for models of fiscal illusion.
