    Notes: Drying tests for ripe and green banana (Musa cv. Giant Cavendish AAA) slices and for a foam made from ripe banana puree were performed in a household microwave oven and in a laboratory forced draft warm air oven. Weight change of the banana slices as a function of time in both ovens, and temperature and relative humidity (RH) of air leaving the microwave oven were recorded. Drying rates were calculated and the data fitted to a variable diffusion model. Drying time in the microwave oven was seventeen to twenty times less than in the forced draft oven. The drying energy efficiency in the microwave oven was about 30%.

    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé Le MIRCEN de Biotechnologie a son siège à l'Institut de Recherches et Technologie Industrielles pour l'Amérique Centrale (ICAITI), dans la ville de Guatémala, et fait parti du réseau des centres MIRCEN fondés et soutenus par des agences spécifiques de Nations Unies, particulièrement l'UNESCO et l'UNEP. Dans l'organigrame de l'ICAITI, les activités concernant le MIRCEN se déroulent au sein de la Division de Recherche Appliquée, en coordination et avec l'appui de 38 laboratoires especialisés dans 12 pays proches. Le MIRCEN a été établi en 1979 et ses principales activités dans la région ont été l'organisation des cours, d'entrainement professionnel, stages et ‘workshops’ sur thèmes avancés dans le champ de la conversion et de l'utilisation de la biomasse. Par moyen de la recherche contractée à l'exterior par l'ICAITI, quelques uns des efforts d'investigation ont été réalisés de façon conjointe avec des laboratoires associés. Ci-dessus la description sommaire de quelques unes de ces activités.
    Abstract: Resumen E1 MIRCEN de Biotecnología Centroamericano tiene como sede al Instituto Centroamericano de Investigación y Tecnología Industrial, ICAITI, localizado en la ciudad de Guatemala y que es parte de la Red de Centros MIRCEN, fundado y apoyado por agencias específicas de Naciones Unidas, especialmente la UNESCO y UNEP. Dentro de la estructura organizativa de ICAITI, las actividades del MIRCEN las lleva a cabo la División de Investigación Aplicada, en coordinación con, y con el apoyo de 38 laboratorios especializados en 12 países cercanos. El MIRCEN se estableció en 1979 y sus principales actividades regionales han sido la organización de cursos de entrenamiento profesional y seminarios y talleres sobre tópicos avanzados en el campo de la conversión y utilización de biomasa. A través de la investigación contratada externamente por ICAITI, varios esfuerzos investigativos conjuntos han sido realizados conjuntamente con laboratorios asociados. A continuación se describen en forma sumarizada algunas de estas actividades.
    Notes: Summary The Central American Biotechnology MIRCEN is based at the Central American Research Institute for Industry, ICAITI, located in Guatemala City and is part of the MIRCEN network created and sponsored by UN organizations, mainly UNESCO and UNEP. The MIRCEN activities within ICAITI are carried out by the Applied Research Division in co-ordination with, and with the help of 38 laboratories in 12 neighbouring countries. The MIRCEN was established in 1979 and its regional activities have been concerned mainly with organizing regional training courses and advanced seminars and workshops in the field of biomass conversion and utilization. Through the externally contracted research arranged by ICAITI, several joint research efforts have been carried out by the associated laboratories. These activities are summarized.

    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé Les résultats présentés concernant le fonctionnement de trois réacteurs méthanogènes de dimensions différentes, utilisant comme matière première le jus de pulpe de café. Tous les réacteurs étaient compactés avec de la mousse de polyuréthane non réticulée, et avaient des formes géométriques similaires. Les opérations à l'échelle pilote ont donné une moindre production de gaz par unité de volume, mais un taux de conversion par unité de charge organique plus élevé, même à des températures inférieures.
    Abstract: Resumen Se presentan los resultados de la operación de tres reactores metano-génicos de differente tamaño, usando jugo de pulpa de café como materia prima. Los reactores fueron empacados con esponja de poliuretano no reticulado y se mantuvo una similitud geométrica. La operación de una planta piloto mostró una menor producción de gas por unidad volumétrica de reactor pero conversiones mejores, aún a más bajas temperaturas.
    Notes: Summary Results from the operation of methanogenic reactors of three different sizes, using coffee pulp juice as raw material, are presented. All reactors were packed with unreticulated polyurethane foam and geometrical similarity was maintained. Pilot plant operation showed lower gas production per unit reactor volume but higher conversions per unit of organic load, even at lower temperatures.

    Notes: Abstract An alternative procedure to obtain the parameters of Monod's growth model in batch culture is presented. It is based on the integral kinetic analysis methodology, employs a one-dimensional Golden Section search optimization method and is implemented on a spread-sheet programme. The procedure is discussed in detail and is illustrated by analysis of batch substrate consumption data by an aerobic bacterial consortium.
