Abstract Venezuelan clays, mainly composed by chlorite, have been studied before their use in the hydrodemetallization of heavy oils. Contrarily to other techniques, the Mössbauer spectroscopy allowed to identify the presence of small particles of aluminous goethite, in the initial natural clay, and of aluminous hematite in the calcined state. The latter small particles are the precursors of the active phases, the pyrrhotites in the present case.
