Notes: An intense electron beam travelling axially through a superconducting tube is studied. We show numerically that it is necessary to compensate the space-charge effect of the electron beam nearly completely in order to focus the beam by means of the superconductor tube. The tube functions as a lens not only for electrons injected parallel to the tube axis but also for electrons having a small initial radial velocity component. Additionally, it is suggested that the simple straight superconducting tube may function as a wiggler for free-electron lasers. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Electrons traveling through a superconducting tube are studied. Two simple models are proposed to describe the interaction of the magnetic self-field of the electron stream with the superconducting tube. In the first model A, a complete expulsion of the magnetic flux from the superconductor due to the Meissner effect is assumed. On the contrary, a complete flux penetration through vortices is supposed in the second model B. Both models indicate an electron focusing when the space-charge effect is compensated. The focusing length is estimated. For electrons traveling in the vicinity of the tube axis, the focusing length determined according to model A is nearly independent on the distance of the electrons from the tube axis, while the focusing length according to model B increases at increasing distance of the electrons from the tube axis. Similar focusing effects are obtained by a superconducting cone. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: By acetalisation of L-menthone (2) with mercaptoacetic acid and derivatives of benzylamine, the spirocyclic N,S-acetals 3 were obtained as single diastereomers. The reaction of an epimeric mixture of unsubstituted thiazolidinones 4 with acetic anhydride or allyl iodide afforded homochiral N-acetyl (5) or N-allyl N,S-acetals (6), respectively. The configuration of the new stereogenic centres were proven by X-ray crystallography.

Description / Table of Contents: Highly corrosion resistant special steels for flue gas desulfurisation plantsHighly corrosion resistant stainless steel grades have been proved under the severe corrosion conditions existing in flue gas desulfurisation scrubbers (FGD). Besides general corrosion pitting, crevice corrosion and eventually stress corrosion cracking can occur. Thus highly alloyed special steels must be used. Steel grades with a minimum content of 2.75% Mo are essential. At higher chloride levels and decreasing pH-values higher alloyed stainless steels containing up to 6% Mo are necessary. Some of these special steels are described in view to their composition and mechanical properties; their corrosion behavior has been tested under laboratory and field conditions. The use of nitrogen alloyed grades has been shown of remarkable advantage. Nitrogen additions enhance the mechanical properties and structure stability.Furthermore the precipitation of deleterious intermetallic compounds during heat treatment will be delayed by nitrogen additions, thus e.g. multi layer weldings can be carried out with higher security in view to corrosion resistance and mechanical properties.Materials selection for the different scrubber systems will be illustrated by examples.Up to now experiences about stainless steel components in FGD plants are taken into consideration.Welding with distinctly higher alloyed filler metal at the medium-touched side has been well proved in view to adequate corrosion properties.

Notes: Abstract U. Schmidt [9, 10] showed that every pattern on two letters of length at least 13 is avoidable an a two-letter alphabet (i.e. 2-avoidable). We prove that this bound can be improved to 6. Since there are patterns of length 5 being not 2-avoidable, this bound is optimal.
