    Notes: Abstract SCIPION is a new state of the art digital sounder that has been developed by France Telecom-CNET for ionospheric monitoring and research. Extensive data processing using DSP technology has resulted in a low power, low cost and full featured system for both vertical and oblique soundings. A SCIPION system is in the process of being installed in Dakar, Senegal, to study HF propagation in the sub-equatorial ionosphere. However, preliminary results have still been obtained during experiments wit a prototype system. In this paper, the system is described and some illustrative examples of its capabilities are shown.

    Notes: Abstract HF radar observations of mid-latitude sporadic-E irregularities carried out with the Valensole radar in South France are compared with simultaneous ionosonde measurements underneath the irregularity zones. In a previous study of Valensole radar data, it has been shown that HF backscatter from the night-time mid-latitude E region is usually associated with largescale wave-like modulations. To obtain more information on the geophysical conditions prevailing during backscatter events, a new experiment was performed which also included a vertical ionosonde beneath the scattering region. The data to be presented here are from two periods when radar scattering appeared simultaneously with large variations in the virtual height and the Doppler velocity of F-layer reflected echoes measured with the vertical ionosonde, indicating very clearly the passage of atmospheric gravity waves (AGWs). The effect of the atmospheric waves on the sporadic-E layer is not always as marked as it is in the F region. In the first event, the passage of the AGWs is accompanied by an upward followed by a downward movement of the Es-layer. The apparent descending movement of the Es-layer from 135 to 110km in less than 10 min corresponded to a positive (downward) Doppler velocity of 35 m/s measured by the vertical ionosonde, and was accompanied by a range variation in the radar scattering region with a negative rate of about 90–110 m/s. In the second event, the Es-layer is not as strongly disturbed as in the previous one, but, nevertheless, the range variations of the scattering region can still be associated with height fluctuations of the Es-layer.

    Notes: Abstract. Four patients underwent a laparoscopic left hepatic resection for solid tumor, two for metastasis from colonic cancer, and two for focal nodular hyperplasia (final diagnosis). The procedure was performed according to the rules of conventional hepatic surgery and cancer surgery. No blood transfusion was necessary. No surgical complication occurred. In malignant disease, laparoscopy allows a good staging and the performance of a real no-touch technique; the specimen is removed in a plastic bag without contact to the abdominal wall. In symptomatic benign disease the esthetic benefit of the laparoscopic approach is real. In asymptomatic benign disease, laparoscopy could allow large biopsies in the case of uncertain diagnosis or dangerous resection. It allows safe resections in the case of small, well-located tumors. This approach requires sophisticated material and extensive experience in both laparoscopy and hepatobiliary surgery.

    Notes: Abstract RP 59500 is a new semisynthetic injectable streptogramin with excellent activity against most gram-positive bacteria. In order to assess its potential for the treatment of tissue infections, the pharmacokinetics and penetration into suction blister fluid were studied in a pilot phase I study in six male volunteers following a single infusion of 12 mg/kg over 1 h. Plasma and suction blister fluid concentrations were determined by microbiological assay. The mean peak concentration in plasma was 8.65 mg/l at the end of infusion. The mean plasma elimination half-life was 1.48 h. The mean peak concentration in interstitial fluid was 2.41 mg/l and was reached after 1 h in two volunteers and after 2 h in the other four. The mean percentage penetration for the interval 0–6 h was 82.5 %. RP 59500 was still detectable in interstitial fluid at 6 h at a mean concentration of 0.92 ± 0.25 mg/l. The data of this pilot study demonstrate good penetration of RP 59500 into non-inflammatory interstitial fluid.

    Notes: Abstract In vitro culture of Hevea was undertaken to propagate selected clones on their own roots. The challenge was to overcome the failure of cuttings due to the poor conformity of regenerated root systems. Trees of several juvenile or mature genotypes were propagated either by in vitro microcutting, or by somatic embryogenesis, and planted in the field. Certain static and dynamic components of the root system were observed at different growth stages, from 0 to 3 years, and compared to those of seedlings of the same age used in the trial as a reference. A simple method was designed for measuring the vigour and balance of the root system. The in vitro plantlets had a well-developed taproot and lateral root system, with an architecture similar to that of plants obtained from seed. Moreover, clear differences occurred between selected clones for the relative vigour of the tap roots, lateral roots and trunk.

    Notes: Abstract Tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) plants expressing a partial ferredoxin-dependent glutamine-2-oxoglutarate aminotransferase (Fd-GOGAT) cDNA in the antisense orientation under the control of the 35S promoter, were used to study the metabolism of amino acids, 2-oxoglutarate and ammonium following the transition from CO2 enrichment (where photorespiration is inhibited) to air (where photorespiration is a major process of ammonium production in leaves). The leaves of the lowest Fd-GOGAT expressors accumulated more foliar glutamine (Gln) and α-ketoglutarate (α-KG) than the untransformed controls in both growth conditions. Photorespiration-dependent increases in foliar ammonium, glutamine, α-KG and total amino acids were proportional to the decreases in foliar Fd-GOGAT activity. No change in endoprotease activity was observed following transfer to air in the Fd-GOGAT transformants or the untransformed controls which has similar activities over a broad range of pH values. We conclude that several pathways of amino acid biosynthesis are modified when NH3 + and Gln accumulate in leaves.
