Notes: Abstract In the present paper, the averaged spectral density of electronic states, 〈ϱ(k, E)〉, has been computed for three-dimensional disordered systems with spherical well type atomic potentials. The formula for 〈ϱ(k, E)〉 is derived by using a realistic perturbational approach that takes propagator modification into account, together with a handy approximation due toBallentine. 〈ϱ(k, E)〉 has been computed for various sets of potential strength and concentration, and the dependence of 〈ϱ(k, E)〉 upon these parameters has been discussed. The motivation behind the computations reported here, is to examine the circumstances under which the electron motion in disordered systems is expected to be almost free electronic. Our principal finding is that a simultaneous existence of weak electron-scatterer interaction-potential and high density of scatterers would tend to make the motion of an electron in a disordered system almost like that of a free one.

Notes: Abstract We have investigated theoretically the carrier concentrations and Fermi-levels in extrinsic semiconductors (both n- and p-type), taking into account the existence of holes in valence band for n-type semiconductors and of electrons in conduction band for p-type systems. To indicate the quantitative implications of the theoretical analyses, we have performed some numerical calculations with respect to n-type germanium and explored the physical conditions under which we would be required to take account of the role of carriers excited over the band gap, in evaluating the statistics of carriers in extrinsic semiconductors.

Notes: Abstract Surface state energies are computed for a one dimensional semi-infinite system, which accommodates simultaneously (1) surface distortion (2) adsorbed impurity (3) finite distance of separation between vacuum potential discontinuity and surface atom and (4) negative (attractive) bulk potential. The locations of surface state energies in the band gaps are indicated; further, nature of variations of surface state energies with relevant parameters, covering a wide range, is studied. The results are discussed critically; besides, they are compared with similar ones obtained on the basis of two other models, one due to Aerts and the other due to Neuberger and Rutherford Fischer.

Notes: A derivation of most general existence conditions for surface states of a semi-infinite Kronig-Penney crystal is reported. They reduce to Steslicka's conditions under a subsidiary restriction and also indicate that the surface-state energies may lie in the allowed bulk bands. Numerical computations supporting the qualitative conclusions are provided.
