    Notes: The paper discusses the practical and theoretical implications of the results of a controlled treatment trial. Family therapy was compared with individual, supportive psychotherapy for the management of severe eating disorder. Family therapy was markedly more effective in achieving improvement in one of four subgroups of patients: (a): those with early onset, short duration; (b) early onset, duration more than 3 years; (c) late onset, after the age of 18 years; (d) those with bulimia nervosa. The therapies used are described, as are the changes in clinical practice arising from the study. Theoretical considerations concerning notions of family structure, the family life-cycle and symptomatic and family change are also discussed.

    Notes: Reducing sugars derivatized with a strong UV chromophore, were detected at nanogram levels using a high-performance liquid chromatograph equipped with an ultra-violet absorbance detector. Sugar standards were derivatized with p-nitrobenzyloxyamine. Quantitative derivatization was. established using thin-layer chromate graphic methods. A μBondapak/Carbohydrate column, with acetonitrile and water as the mobile phase, was used to separate and quantitate 0.5-5.0 ng of individual sugars. Modifications of this method may be developed to detect low-level contamination, adulteration, and decomposition of food constituents.

    Notes: Abstract Protein-energy malnutrition in anorexia nervosa is an under-recognised cause of muscle dysfunction. To characterise the skeletal myopathy that occurs in patients with severe anorexia nervosa, muscle function and structure were comprehensively examined in eight young adult female patients with severe (40%) self-induced weight loss. All of the patients showed impaired muscle function on strength and exercise measurement. The maximum voluntary contraction force for the patient group was significantly less than predicted values. Electromyography revealed myopathy in five of the patients, four of whom also had electro-physiological evidence of neuropathy. However, muscle biopsy specimens consistently showed myopathic changes with severe type 2 fibre atrophy but with no evidence of neuropathic changes. Ultrastructurally, there was separation and segmental loss of myofibrils and most biopsy samples contained abundant glycogen granules; we have previously reported that one of the most consistent biochemical abnormalities in these patients is impaired ischaemic lactate responses to forearm exercise. The result of severe protein-energy malnutrition on the musculo-skeletal system is a metabolic myopathy. Although the patients admitted to a variety of abnormal dieting behaviours, such as over-exercising and self-induced vomiting, no association was found between any of these and quantitative histological changes in the muscle biopsy samples. It is recommended that myopathy in anorexia nervosa be treated by instituting an appropriate refeeding programme.

    Notes: A system for purge-and -trap with thermal desorption was developed and optimized to moniotor aroma compounds at ambient temperatures. Canned tomato juice volatiles were used as a model system to develop and evaluate the method. Volatile components were first adsorbed on insert-traps packed with Tenax-TA polymer, then thermally desorbed directly inside a gas chromatograph injector. Volatile matgerials occuring in Very low amounts could be entrained and subsequently chrfomatographed, with sensitivity limited by the purity of the sweep gas. Quantitative measurement of tomato juice volatiles was linear with sample size upn to 100 gram samples. The amount of trapped volatiles was proportional to trapping time; howver, low-and intermediate-boilers broke through the trap after one hour while high-boilers continued to be retained. Apurge gas flow rate of 20ml/min gave optimum results mediate-biolers. Optimum recovery of volatile compounds was obtained with a desorption temperature of 200°c for 5 min. Coefficients of variation from triplicate runs were relatively small. The method showed promise for a simple, sensitive, and reproducibel flavor volatiles collection system for the accurate analysis of tomato compounds.
