Notes: The Rutter scales are a pair of short questionnaires for collecting information from parents and teachers about the behaviour of children aged about nine to thirteen years. They focus on emotional and conduct disorders and were designed as screening instruments for epidemiological research. Over the last 25 years they have been used in over 80 studies of various kinds around the world, their psychometric properties have been reported in great detail, and the original scales have been adapted for use with younger children and extended to include items about prosocial behaviours. In this article we summarize the evidence that has accumulated about the scales, provide some guidelines for researchers considering using the scales, and consider some applications for them in the future.

Notes: Comorbidity, meaning the co-occurrence of two supposedly separate conditions at above chance levels, provides a most important research opportunity. It requires a rigorous examination of diagnostic concepts and a systematic critical testing of those concepts. Such testing may shed much needed light on risk mechanisms. Four issues that have given rise to misunderstanding in this connection are discussed: definitions of terms, diagnostic validity, reassessment and research strategies.

Notes: Abstract The key features of attachment theory are summarized and the unresolved questions considered in terms of a behavioural control system, measurement of attachment security, qualities of attachment, the role of temperament, transformation of a dyadic quality into an individual characteristic, internal working models, manifestations of attachment post infancy, how one relationship affects another relationship, boundaries of attachment, associations with later functioning, the role of parenting qualities and patterns of caregiving, adaptive value of secure attachment, and disorders of attachment. The clinical implications are discussed in terms of: the need to reject tine traditional psychoanalytic theories of development, the patterns of residential care for children, the provision of child care, the assessment of parenting, the effects of parental divorce and family break-up, “maternal bonding” to infants, psychotherapy and disorders of attachment.

Notes: Dates of onset of psychiatric symptoms are required in determining whether diagnostic criteria are met for a number of disorders and for a variety of research questions. However, little attention has been paid to the precision and reliability of their recall by parents and children. We present data from two studies indicating that when symptoms have lasted longer than around 3 months, the month of onset usually cannot be accurately reported, while with symptoms that have lasted a year or more, the year of onset is usually uncertain. The implications of these findings for diagnosis and research are discussed.

Notes: Principles and concepts of development are reviewed in relation to life-span issues noting the need to consider: development in its social context; timing of experiences; intrinsic and experiential factors; continuities and discontinuities; parallels and differences s between normal and abnormal development; heterotypic and homotypic continuities; key life transitions; risk and protective factors; indirect chain affects; mediating mechanisms; age as an index of maturational and experiential factors. Developmental findings from childhood to adult longitudinal studies arc reviewed for possible mediating factors. These include: genetic mechanisms; the(non-genetic) biological substrate; shaping of the environment; cognitive and social skills: self-esteem and self-efficacy; habits, cognitive sins and coping styles: links between experiences

Notes: Thirty-seven school-age children reared in 27 lesbian households were compared with 38 school-age children reared in 27 heterosexual single-parent households, with respect to their psychosexual development and their emotions, behaviour and relationships. Systematic standardized intervews with the mothers and with the children, together with parent and teacher questionnaires, were used to make the psychosexual and psychiatric appraisal. The two groups did not differ in terms of their gender identity, sex role behaviour or sexual orientation. Also, they did not differ on most measures of emotions, behaviour and relationships-although there was some indication of more frequent psychiatric problems in the single-parent group. It was concluded that rearing in a lesbian household per se did not lead to atypical psychosexual development or constitute a psychiatric risk factor.

Notes: A total population survey was made of all 10-yr-old children in an inner London borough. As part of this study, systematic standardised interviews were held with random samples of parents of children from West Indian families and of children from non-immigrant families. In contrast to the situation in the Caribbean, the nuclear family was the norm for West Indian families living in London, just as it was non-immigrant families. In many respects the West Indians and non-immigrant families were closely similar. No differences were found in rates of parental mental disorder or criminality and the quality of family relationships was the same in the two groups. However, the West Indian parents were more likely to hold semiskilled or unskilled manual jobs and to live in poor quality overcrowded housing. In spite of this, they were also more likely to own their own house. West Indian families had many more children and differed somewhat in their patterns of child rearing. The significance of these findings is discussed in terms of both likely effects on child development and also the future implications for West Indian families living in London.
