    Notes: Summary Involvement of the choroid plexus by lymphoma (Hodgkin) is a hitherto undescribed complication. We report herein the case of a 49-year-old man who developed, shortly before death, neurologic symptoms seemingly related to extensive involvement of chroid plexus and surrounding ventricular structures by lymphoma (Hodgkin's). There was also multifocal involvement of cranial nerves and spinal canal contents.

    Notes: Abstract The influence of environmental parameters (temperature, salinity and available food) on the condition, reproductive activity and biochemical composition of a native population of Ostrea edulis L. in San Cibran (Galicia, Spain) was studied between September 1988 and December 1989. Histological preparations of gonads showed that gametogenesis started when temperature was at its lowest in winter. The water temperature in San Cibran never fell low enough to interrupt it. Gametogenesis proceeded slowly and spawning took place in May–June, although the predicted time of ripening was early March. Salinity in San Cibran was relatively stable throughout the year; it did not seem to have any influence on gametogenesis. Available food appeared to be a very important factor in controlling gonad growth, once gametogenesis was initiated. The major concentration of suspended organic particulate matter was present in the spring at the time of rapid gonadal maturation. Only one spawning period was observed. Larvae were released when the food in the water was high. Seasonal changes in the main biochemical components of this oyster were determined for a standard individual. Lipids and carbohydrates presented a similar time-course whereas proteins were constant. When food was abundant, energy reserves were built up. Spawning produced a decrease in biochemical constituent levels, and recovery coincided with the phytoplankton bloom. The stored reserves, mainly lipids, were used to overcome a state of energy imbalance in late autumn associated with low food availability. Results show this oyster to be an opportunist organism which concentrates its reproductive effort during a short period of favourable conditions and which is directly dependent on nutritive availability in the environment.

    Notes: Abstract An energy budget for metamorphosis in oyster spatOstrea edulis L., collected in the Instituto Español de Oceanografía during March–April 1988, was determined. The energy cost of metamorphosis was calculated from measurements of biochemical components which form the principal reserves of energy and which are used significantly during metamorphosis. The results indicated that protein supplied most of the energy inO. edulis spat. The idea that neutral lipids were used selectively as an energy reserve during the metamorphosis of this bivalve marine larvae was questioned.

    Notes: Abstract A novel technique for the fabrication of high aspect ratio three-dimensional (3D) microstructures is presented. A suitable resist (e.g. PMMA or SU-8) is exposed using focused MeV (million electron volt) protons in a direct write process to produce 3D microstructures with sub-micrometer feature sizes. By adjusting the energy of the proton beam, the depth of the microstructures can be controlled very accurately (e.g. between 5 and 160 μm). Single layer SU-8, a newly developed, chemically accelerated, negative tone, near UV, photo-resist, has been used in multiple exposures using different proton energies to produce intricate 3D microstructures. The combination of a well controlled exposure depth coupled with the ability to tilt the sample with respect to the beam increases the manufacturing capability, and allows the production of complex microstructures with well defined edges in single layers of resist.

    Notes: Summary Voltage-clamp experiments using the three-microelectrode voltage clamp technique were performed on ventroabdominal flexor muscles of the crustacean Atya lanipes. Potassium and chloride currents were found to underlie the normal, passive response of the muscle. Blocking potassium currents with tetraethylammonium and replacing chloride ions with methanesulfonate did not unmask an inward current. By treating the muscle with the sulfhydryl-alkylating agent 4-cyclopentene-1,3-dione an inward current was detected. The current induced by the agent is carried by Ca2+, since it is abolished in Ca2+-free solutions. The induced Ca+current is detected at about -40 mV and reaches a mean maximum value of -78 μA/cm2 at ca. -10 mV. At this potential the time to peak is close to 15 msec.The induced Ca2+ current inactivated with 1-sec prepulses which did not elicit detectable Ca2+ current; the fitted h xcurve had a midpoint of-38 mV and a steepness of 5.0 mV. Measurements of isometric tension were performed in small bundles of fibers, and the effects of the sulfhydryl-alkylating agents 4-cyclopentene-1,3-dione andN-ethylmaleimide were investigated. Tetanic tension was enhanced in a strictly Ca2+-dependent manner by 4-cyclopentene1,3-dione. The amplitude of K+ contractures increased after treatment with N-ethylmaleimide. It is concluded that Ca2+ channels are made functional by the sulfhydryl-specific reagents and that the increase in tension is probably mediated by an increase in Ca2+ influxthrough the chemically induced Ca2+ channels.

    Notes: Abstract Evidence is presented that the high levels of internal l-glutamic and l-aspartic acid in frog Rana esculenta red blood cells are due to the existence of a specific carrier for acidic amino acids of high affinity K m = 3 μm and low capacity (Vmax) 0.4 μmol l-Glu · Kg−1 dry cell mass · 10 min−1. It is Na+ dependent and the incorporation of l-glutamic acid can be inhibited by l and d-aspartate and l-cysteic acid, while d-glutamic does not inhibit. Moreover, this glutamic uptake shows a bell-shaped dependence on the external pH. All these properties show that this carrier belongs to the system X AG − family. Besides the incorporation through this system, l-glutamic acid is also taken up through the ASC system, although, under physiological conditions, this transport is far less important, since it has relatively low affinity K m 39 μm but high capacity (V max) 1.8 μmol l-Glu · Kg−1 dry cell mass · 10 min−1.

    Notes: Abstract The Na+-independent uptake of l-alanine has been studied in trout red blood cells, isolated hepatocytes and peripheral blood lymphocytes. The present study shows the existence of two functionally different Na+-independent systems for short chain neutral amino acids in these cells. They are designated as asc systems because of their resemblance to systems described in other cell types. Besides their independence of sodium and a rough similarity in substrate preference, the most important property shared by the two carriers is a lack of trans-stimulation, allowing further differentiation from system L. One of them is an unusually stereospecific carrier present in red blood cells, the other is less restrictive and present in hepatocytes and peripheral blood lymphocytes. Extracellular acid pH increases the incorporation to red blood cells, while it slightly depresses the uptake in the other cells. From the data presented, it is not possible, at first, to classify these carriers as asc 1 or asc 2 systems. Moreover, the system present in red cells resembles that found in the nonerythroid cells, BSC-1, while there is no clear parallelism between the system found in hepatocytes/lymphocytes and any of those described previously.
