Notizen: Ultraweak luminescence in the spectral region 300–660 nm is generated in the enzymatic (tyrosinase EC.1.14.18.1) and autooxidative polymerization of l-DOPA, 5-S-cys-teinyl-DOPA, and l-DOPA + cysteine to eumelanins and pheomelanins, respectively. Using sensitive calibrated single photon counting equipment, the photon emission intensity I and quantum yield φ have been measured: I = 10–100 hν/s cm3, φ≤ 10–13 for enzymatic reactions, and I = 500–3000 hν/s cm3, φ≥ 5 × 10–12 for autooxidative ones. 5-S-cysteinyl-DOPA and cysteine exhibit diminished I and φ-values relative to DOPA. Tests with chemiluminogenic probes-luminol and lucigenin, SOD, catalase, peroxidase, H2O2, and spectrophotometric measurements indicate that photon emission is associated with degradative oxidations of melanin subunits by means of active oxygen species as H2O2 and O2.

Notizen: Abstract Detailed studies on dielectric and electric properties of synthetic pirocatechol and indolederived melanin, pure and doped with Eu3+, have been performed, D.C. and a.c. electrical conductivity as well as dielectric permittivity and loss angle tg have been investigated. Activation energy of d.c. conductivity for the investigated temperature range (0°C〈T〈50°C equals 0.63 eV for pirocatechol and 0.62 eV for indolemelanin. Europium ions Eu3+ doped to the samples do not influence the values of activation energy, but the addition of Eu3+ ions decreases the conductivity values. On the basis of depolarization current curves the energy of trap level referred to Eu3+ has been calculated. It equals 0.58 eV for pirocatechol and 0.60 eV for indolemelanin.

Notizen: Abstract Humic acids (HA) are complex, dark, paramagnetic biopolymers, ubiquitus in the soil and aquatic ecosystems. Due to their peculiar properties (multifluorophore system capable of excitation energy transfer, continuous featureless absorption over a wide spectral range, and paramagnetism), HA play an important role as an efficient target for UV solar radiation, O2, and O3—detrimental environmental factors which affect the Earth's biosphere. Photooxidation of HA causes changes in the absorption and luminescence properties of HA which may be of significant importance for environmental photophysics and photochemistry. We have studied effects of UV irradiation on the degradation of several commercial HA (Fluka, Merck, and Serva). Aqueous, aerated alkaline solutions of HA (0.1–0.4 g/L in 0.006–0.1 M Na2CO3) were irradiated with an electrodeless Hg (254-nm) lamp in a flow system during several hours. After different times of irradiation, solutions were assayed by means of fluorescence (Fl), absorption (UV–Vis), and chemiluminescence (CL) spectroscopy. The data obtained indicate that the free radical-mediated degradative photooxidation of HA macromolecules is accompanied by a very weak, long-lived chemiluminescence (340–800 nm), a gradual decrease in absorbancy with characteristic changes in color coefficients Q 4/6, Q 2.7/6.0, and Q 2.7/4.0, and an increase in the intensity of Fl emission (340- to 560-nm) and excitation (250- to 400-nm) spectra. Processes undergoing these changes are intrinsically associated with the generation of excited states and reactive oxygen species $$({\text{ROS}} \cdot {\text{, O}}_{\text{2}}^ - ,{\text{ OH}} \cdot {\text{, RO}}_{\text{2}} \cdot ,{\text{ H}}_{\text{2}} {\text{O}}_{\text{2}} ,{\text{ and O}}_{\text{2}}^{\text{*}} ;{\text{ }}^{\text{1}} \Delta _{\text{g}} ,{\text{ }}^{\text{1}} \sum {_{\text{g}}^{\text{ + }} } )$$ . These processes are expected to play a vital role in the natural environment, e.g., HA-photosensitized decomposition of xenobiotics and solar energy transfer in symbiotic hydrobionts.

Notizen: Abstract The question of survival of bodily death is often considered to be beyond contemporary scientific methods and conceptual categories. However, recent research into spontaneous radiations from living systems suggests a scientific foundation for the ancient association between light and life, and a biophysical hypothesis of the conscious self that could survive death of the body. All living organisms emit low-intensity light; at the time of death, that radiation is ten to 1,000 times stronger than that emitted under normal conditions. This “deathflash” is independent of the cause of death, and reflects in intensity and duration the rate of dying. The vision of intense light reported in near-death experiences may be related to this deathflash, which may hold an immense amount of information. The electromagnetic field produced by necrotic radiation, containing energy, internal structure, and information, may permit continuation of consciousness beyond the death of the body.

Notizen: The catechol oxidase-catalysed and autoxidative transformation of 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA) to eumelanin have been studied by oxygen consumption, energy transfer, absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. Formation of transient dopachrome (λmax = 480 nm) and dopalutin (λex = 423 nm, λem = 491 nm) have been found in the enzymatic and autoxidative reaction. In the enzymatic reaction, neither a photon emission with quantum yield Φ 〉 10-13 nor energy transfer to triplet and singlet energy acceptors (sensitizers such as anthracene derivatives, xanthene dyes and chlorophyll-a) in water and micellar solutions have been found. The autoxidative reaction is chemiluminescent (Φ = 10-9), the emission occurring in the 400-600 nm range. The excitation energy is not transferred to sensitizers. The effect of various enzymes and traps of active oxygen species as well as the spectral distribution of chemiluminescence indicate that there is no emission from oxygen dimoles. Carbonates and active species of oxygen are shown to participate in the chemiexcitation reaction.

Notizen: The kinetic and spectral characteristics (chemiluminescence and fluorescence spectra) of ultraweak luminescence accompanying the electrolysis of a sodium citrate-methanol-dissolved O2 solution and its application for the determination of antioxidants were examined. The energy transfer-assisted luminescence sensitized by anthracene provides a fast and sensitive assay for the determination of the concentration and kinetic parameters of antioxidants and free radical scavengers.
