    Notes: Summary An elderly patient suffering acute subdural haematoma associated with cerebral contusion was treated by percutaneous subdural tapping while preparing for craniotomy. Most of the subdural haematoma, though of high density on computed tomography scanning, proved to be semiliquid. Drainage of the haematoma yielded resolution of the mass effect, and was followed by a rapid improvement of consciousness. This observation suggests the significance of trial subdural tapping for the treatment of acute traumatic subdural haematoma prior to craniotomy.

    Notes: Summary Incorporation of 0.1 mM3H-leucine into protein by isolated fat cells, with pyruvate as the only extracellular carbohydrate, was stimulated by: a) insulin, 0.1–4 ng/ml, or b) a mixture of 19 amino acids, 0.05–5 mM. Treatment of fat cells with trypsin, under conditions known to reduce binding of insulin by their plasma membranes, abolished stimulation of incorporation by the hormone but not by the amino acid mixture. These results imply that the actions of insulin on incorporation of amino acids into protein are initiated by interaction with plasma membranes.

    Notes: Abstract  The vascular wall structure in the human full-term placental villi of normal pregnancy was studied by means of light and electron microscopy with an improved technique of perfusion fixation and tissue preparation. We observed 81 sections of stem villi that showed cross-sectional profiles of paired vessels in their center. Both vascular walls contained a large amount of extracellular matrix and no elastic lamina between smooth muscle cells of the media, making identification of the artery and the vein quite difficult at first sight. We then noted that the density of the smooth muscle cell population was always considerably higher in one than the other, and identified the former as artery and the latter as vein on the basis of their connection with larger arteries and veins running on the chorionic plate. Between the paired vessels, the artery had a smaller caliber than the vein, and the ratio of venous to arterial caliber was distributed from 1.0 to 2.5. The thickness of media was usually thicker in the vein than in the artery. Clusters of elastic fibers were found occasionally in the media of arteries and veins, and basement membrane-like materials were associated frequently with the elastic fibers and were distributed widely in the media as well as in the adventitia. In the veins, the smooth muscle cells of the most superficial part of the media contained well-developed rough endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi apparatus, indicating differentiation to secrete extracellular matrices. The present study revealed the difference of wall structure between arteries and veins in the placental stem villi for the first time at the ultrastructural level, and suggested differentiation of venous smooth muscle cells, possibly by some influence from the luminal side.

    Notes: Abstract Background: Mesenteric cyst (MC) is a relatively rare disease, and its sonographic characteristics have not been sufficiently analyzed. Methods: We studied the sonographic findings of eight patients with MC, with attention paid to its size, shape, internal echoes, and especially the presence or absence of lateral shadowing and the mode of back echoes. In four cases, the sound velocity and acoustic impedance of cystic fluid were also measured. The mode of blood flow was evaluated by color Doppler sonography. Results: Six cases showed an oval or comma-shaped mass. Internal echoes were present in six cases, and two of them showed a pseudosolid pattern. In these cases, M-mode sonography confirmed the movement of these internal echoes. Only one case showed a posterior echo enhancement, and no case showed lateral shadowing. Sound velocity measured in four cases was 1515–1537 m/s, with an acoustic impedance of 1.550–1.576 kg/m2/s. No blood flow signals were obtained from the lesion. Conclusion: MC exhibits so many patterns on ultrasound that we should consider the possibility of MC when encountering an avascular oval mesenteric mass.

    Notes: Abstract Methods: We studied the clinical data of seven patients with portal tumor thrombus (PTT) due to gastrointestinal (GI) cancer to determine the radiologic patterns and clinical implications of this rare complication. Results: (a) PTT was located along the entire splenic vein in three cases, at the splenomesenteric confluence in one case, and in the superior mesenteric vein in one case. Intrahepatic PTT occurred in two of four cases with liver metastasis. (b) One cirrhotic case was complicated by the occurrence of colon cancer associated with PTT in the splenic vein; the esophageal varices became rapidly enlarged and poorly controlled, and the patient died due to repeated variceal rupture. (c) In all patients, abdominal sonography (US) detected PTT and color Doppler sonography confirmed the US findings. Conclusions: The splenic vein should be meticulously observed by color Doppler sonography to check for PTT in patients with GI cancer to improve patient care.

    Notes: Abstract Background: Mesenteric panniculitis (MP) is a relatively rare disease, and sonographic (US) and color Doppler findings have been infrequently reported. Methods: We reviewed the clinical data and US and Doppler results of three cases of MP to determine the role and limitations of these techniques. Results: The sole presenting clinical sign was a soft mass. On US the lesion was imaged as a poorly margined echogenic mass with hypoechoic areas. Color Doppler US visualized the nondeviated mesenteric vessels within the mass, which enabled us to perform a safe guided biopsy. Conclusions: US is useful as an initial diagnostic tool, but its results must be interpreted carefully. Color Doppler US is very useful in demonstrating fine vessels and helps in performing a safe needle biopsy.

    Notes: Abstract To evaluate the suitability of a variety of fast voltage-sensitive dyes for optical recording of rapid transmembrane potential activity in the embryonic nervous system, we screened over twenty dyes, including several newly synthesized probes, in three different embryonic neural preparations: cervical vagus nerve bundle, nodose ganglion, and brainstem from 7-day old chick embryos. Measurements of voltage-related optical signals were made using a multiple-site optical recordingsystem. Signal size, signal-to-noise ratio, photobleaching, and phototoxicity were examined. Several promising new merocyanine-rhodanine dyes for embryonic nervous systems were found.
