Notes: Soaking pigeon pea seeds in 6% sodium bicarbonate solution for 1 h, followed by oven-drying to 10% moisture improved dehusking efficiency from 66% in untreated seeds, or 71% in water-soaked seeds similarly dried, to 94% yield of dhal. Treatment reduced gum and pectin content, increased enzyme activity, but caused losses in protein and starch content of the dhal.

Notes: Abstract Three alternate exposures of Cicer arietinum (gram) root callus to lethal (1 ppm) endosulfan-containing selective medium (SM) and non-selective medium (NSM) yielded a tolerant cell line (1 ESR). Such an induced resistance was retained during subculture on NSM for 15 generations tested so far. Higher soluble proteins and peroxidase activity were found in 1 ESR compared to mother tissue.

Notes: Abstract Saplings of 12 species of common Indian trees were exposed to varying concentration of SO2 to determine the level of SO2 causing no injury, mild injury and severe injury in plants. The following order of sensitivity was emerged, T. indica 〉 P. dulce 〉 M. indica 〉 F. rumphii 〉 H. integrifolia 〉 B. ceiba 〉 F. bengalensis 〉 A. indica 〉 F. religiosa 〉 S. cuminii 〉 P. guajava 〉 F. racemosa. SO2 sorption was extremely low in T. indica and M. indica while F. religiosa and F. racemosa exhibited best efficiency of SO2 Aorption. A correlation was found between the efficiency of SO2 sorption and alkalinity of cytoplasmic pH. Similarly plants rich in sulfite oxidase, in general, exhibited a better resistance. No single intrinsic factor could be held responsible for the manifested response of a tree towards SO2.

Notes: Abstract India with a current student population of around 4 million in its universities and colleges is the third largest system in the world after USA and USSR. The unprecedented expansion of higher education in India, which took place in the last four decades, has, however, been extremely uneven and resulted in the neglect of quality, research and managements aspects. The universities and colleges function much below their optimal levels and fail even to fulfil their minimum and basic tasks such as making admissions, completing teaching, conducting examinations, declaring results and awarding degrees on time. The very credibility of the university system stands eroded. Increasing government control, extra-constitutional pressures in their governance, appointment and dismissal of Vice-Chancellors on political considerations and drift of the academic community from serious academic pursuits have undermined the autonomy of the universities. The paper attempts to analyse from macro-micro angles the causes for the decay of the university system. The National Policy on Education-1986 aims at radical reorganisation of higher education to bring about dynamism in the system through multi-pronged strategies and programmes and structural reforms. Policy interventions have, however, failed to create much impact. The paper brings forth some of the important issues vital to the governance of the universities and highlights the need for a collective endeavour of teachers, students, educational administrators and government and rigorous system of performance audit to bring dynamism into the system.

Notes: When a Padé-type function is used as a trial function, it is necessary to investigate the location of singularities and the zeros of the optimized function. It is shown that an unacceptable wave function can sometimes yield numerically acceptable values because of the nature of the integration procedure. It is also shown that it is possible to remove the undesirable features of a lower order form by invoking the next approximation.

Notes: The ground state wave function of a model potential consisting of a zero-range square well joined to a Coulomb tail is used in a two equivalent centre problem to evaluate the overlap integral (S) and the resonance integral (β). It is shown that an extended Linderberg relation of the form β = K/R (dS/dR) is generally well obeyed. The extended relation has been used within a LCAO framework to obtain dissociation energies of the homonuclear diatomic molecules of the alkali atoms.

Notes: It is shown that trial functions involving Padé approximants yield satisfactory results for the ground state of the helium atom. In particular, the five-parameter form reproduces the best variational function of the type Ψ = e-zsφ(u) obtained numerically, to a remarkable extent.
