    Notes: Summary The development of substance P-like immunoreactivity (SPLI) in the goldfish brain was studied by means of the indirect peroxidase-antiperoxidase technique and an antibody to substance P. By 80 h after fertilization, the first SPLI-cell bodies appear in the ventricular zone of the future diencephalon and the first SPLI-fibers appear in the olfactory bulbs. Two days after hatching (which occurs at 100 h after fertilization), SPLI fibers connecting the olfactory bulbs and hypothalamus are seen. In the optic tectum SPLI-fibers appear for the first time 5 days after hatching. In the brain stem, SPLI-cell bodies appear in juvenile animals 40 days after hatching. The highest number and intensity of SPLI-cell bodies and fibers are found in the area postrema. SPLI-cell bodies are also seen in the gustatory nucleus, nucleus ambiguus, reticular formation of the medulla, dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus and commissural nucleus of Cajal. The significant information gained from the present study is: 1. The rostro-caudal sequence in which the SPLI appears in the developing nuclei of the goldfish brain 2. The reduction of SPLI-cell bodies in some nuclei with age Thus, in the brain stem, SPLI-cell bodies that were labeled in juvenile goldfish were not seen in adults. This might be due to changes in the rate of axonal transport, changes of the SP phenotype during development or cell death. The developmental sequence and relative timing in which SPLI-cell bodies appear in the goldfish, rat and mice are similar.

    Notes: Abstract We have studied two-dimensional argon and nitrogen physisorbed on grafoil by conducting positron lifetime and Doppler broadening measurements as functions of adsorbate coverage and temperature. Positron lifetime and Doppler broadening parameters show turnarounds near one-half monolayer coverages at 77 K. The s parameter of the Doppler broadening spectra measured for one-half monolayer coverages of argon and nitrogen increases with temperature across the melting phase transition. We discuss the observed coverage and temperature effects following models based on Kosterlitz-Thouless-Nelson-Halperin-Young theory of two dimensional melting and positron localization in surface defects.

    Notes: Summary 1. In adult goldfish the caudal half of the optic tectum was removed. In some animals the corresponding optic nerve was crushed as well. The animals were later used to map the retinotectal projection. 2. In fishes with the tectal lesion only, the displaced projection from the missing half-tectum was found to be partially restored over the residual rostral half-tectum, in appropriate retinotopic order. Parts of the residual tectum thus received input from two field positions. 3. In fishes with a tectal lesion and crush of the optic nerve, several animals showed compression of the projection of the entire visual field onto the residual half-tectum. In some animals reduplicated field positions were also observed. 4. The results are discussed in relation to the mechanism controlling selective fibre regeneration. It is concluded that a strict place-specificity does not exist along the rostrocaudal axis of the tectum and a mechanism of connection control involving pattern regulation is discussed.

    Notes: Summary The effect of piperine on the bioavailability and pharmacokinetics of propranolol and theophylline has been examined in a crossover study. Six subjects in each group received a single oral dose of propranolol 40 mg or theophylline (150 mg) alone or in combination with piperine 20 mg daily for 7 days. An earlier tmax and a higher Cmax and AUC were observed in the subjects who received piperine and propranolol. It produced a higher Cmax, longer elimination half-life and a higher AUC with theophylline. In clinical practice, the enhanced systemic availability of oral propranolol and theophylline could be exploited to achieve better therapeutic control and improved patient compliance.

    Notes: An analysis of electronic polarizabilities, interionic potentials, and equilibrium geometries for 20 alkali–halide dimers such as Na2Cl2 is presented. The electronic polarizabilities of ions in dimers have been calculated by taking account of the electrostatic potential due to neighboring ions within the Seitz–Ruffa energy level analysis. The polarizabilities thus obtained for dimers are then used to evaluate the magnitudes of polarization energies and van der Waals dipole–dipole energies. For describing the overlap repulsive potential we have adopted two forms: (i) the revised version of the Born–Mayer potential and (ii) the Harrison form for the overlap repulsive energy. These potentials have been used to obtain the binding energies of monomers as well as dimers, spectroscopic constants of monomers, equilibrium geometries of dimers, and dimerization energies. The results have been discussed and compared with available experimental data.

    Notes: Some errors are pointed out in the method of Singh et al. for calculating the potential parameters in fluorite-type AB2 crystals. It is found that the correction of these errors gives improved agreement between the calculated and experimental values of crystalline state properties. It has been shown that the agreement is further improved if one uses different values of hardness parameters for different pair interactions.

    Notes: The effects of various food grade additives on the mechanical integrity, texture, sensory quality and storage stability of freeze-dried meat (beef and pork sausage) patties were evaluated. The major finding of this study has been the appropriateness of salt soluble meat proteins, dispersed by an optimal incorporation of phosphates, as binder for the meat particles, in a process sequence which includes lyophilization. The phosphate treatment is part of the additive system, the effectiveness of which is augmented by sodium chloride and wheat gluten. The optimum levels of additives to be incorporated into fresh comminuted meat were evolved as: 0.35–0.50% kena, in combination with 1.25–1.50% sodium chloride and 0.15% wheat gluten. The additive system developed herein improved significantly the mechanical, rehydration, textural, sensory and storage characteristics of the products when compared with their respective controls prepared without the additives.

    Notes: Excision of asparagus spears triggered increased peroxidase activity and a shift in isozyme species. Changes in peroxidase occurred within 8 hr after harvest at the cut end of the spear and progressed to the tip end after 24 hr storage at 20 °C and 85% relative humidity. Isozyme changes were accelerated by exogenous ethylene gas. Ethylene production by cut spears and rate of spear toughening were greatest when spears were cut above ground. It is suggested that wound ethylene triggers a shift in peroxidase isozymes which participate in lignin biosynthesis and results in spear toughening after harvest.
