Notes: Summary. Pigweed (Amaranthus sp.) control was not satisfactory where furrow irrigation was substituted for mechanical incorporation of nitralin or trifluralin on loam. Trifluralin concentrations in soil were twice as high after mechanical incorporation compared to furrow irrigation alone. In some instances, nitralin gave excellent pigweed control when rainfall occurred within 1 day after application. However, weed control was not consistent over a 3-year period. When herbicides were applied through a sprinkler irrigation system, chemicals were retained in the upper 5 cm of loamy sand and did not leach. However, herbicide distribution was not uniform due to irregular water movement by wind during application. Trifluralin did not control pigweed when applied and incorporated by sprinkler irrigation. Under the same conditions, nitralin gave good to excellent control.Incorporation de la nitraline et de la trifluraline par la pluie et par I'irrigation

Notes: A low-temperature attachment for Weissenberg cameras operating in the range 10–300 K is described. It consists of an Oxford Instruments continuous-flow helium cryostat and a laboratory-built microprocessor-based temperature controller. The temperature stability and accuracy of the controller are both to better than ±0.1 K over the entire range of operation. Helium consumption is 0.2 l h−1 at 200 K, 0.3 l h−1 at 100 K, 0.65 l h−1 at 30 K and 1.5 l h−1 at 10 K. Slight modifications to the Weissenberg camera enable it to be operated in a continuous-recording mode, in which a series of oscillation photographs may be taken at different temperatures. The very sophisticated temperature programming system allows complex experiments of this type to be carried out automatically, requiring no intervention by the operator.

Notes: [Auszug] HAVING followed the interesting discussion relating to the deferred shedding of their leaves by young beeches, it seems to me that something yet remains to be said, though, as I take it, P. T. (NATURE, May 15) has come very close to the solution. The phenomenon is common here also, and much ...

Notes: [Auszug] IN your review of the report of M. Vallot from his observatory on Mont Blanc (p. 31) you speak of his finding that a stream ceases to increase in speed in a channel of greater incline than 3 in 100 as something unexpected. For more than twenty years I have contended, in repeated ...

Notes: Abstract The structural properties of epitaxial indium nitride thin films were characterized and related to the mechanical properties as measured by nanoindentation. The seven epitaxial InN films examined were deposited over the temperature range 200–400°C by reactive magnetron sputtering on (0 0.1) sapphire substrates buffered with a thin AlN layer. The hardness, surface texture and crystal quality of the InN films were functions of the deposition temperature, with the maximum hardness (11.2 GPa), the smoothest surface, the minimum c-lattice constant (0.5708 nm), and the minimum (0 0.4) X-ray rocking curve width (0.6°) all occurring at the deposition temperature of 350°C. The crystal quality and the hardness of the InN films degraded at both higher and lower temperatures.

Notes: Abstract The effects of nitrogen-beam voltage on the structure, stress, energy band gap and hardness of AIN thin films deposited on Si (111), Si (100) and sapphire (0001) by ion beam assisted deposition (IBAD) are reported. As the nitrogen-beam voltage was increased from 50 to 200 V, the stress and disorder in the AIN films increased as determined by X-ray diffraction, FTIR and Raman spectroscopy. The preferred orientation of the film's c-axis changed from completely normal to the film at 100 V, to a mixture of normal and in the plane of the film at 200 V. For AIN films deposited under the same conditions, the films were more highly oriented on sapphire (0001) than in Si (111). The hardness of the films increased from 18.2 to 23.7 GPa with the nitrogen-beam voltage, and possible reasons for this change in hardness are considered.

Notes: Abstract Single crystals of Bi2Sr2CuO6 (BSCO) were grown from high-temperature solution using KCl-KF as flux. Differential thermal analysis (DTA) of the starting materials enabled an appropriate temperature programme to be introduced for crystal growth by spontaneous nucleation. By means of the improved thermogravimetric (TG) method, Bi2Sr2CuO6 crystals were grown after determination of the crystallization temperature. A single crystal in the form of a thin rectangular platelet up to 6×4 mm2 was obtained and was identified by X-ray powder pattern and by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Analyses were performed by using high-resolution electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), which indicated that it is the nonstoichiometric compound Bi2+xSr2−xCuO6. The superconducting properties are strongly dependent on the composition of Bi and Sr in the crystals and on heat treatment. The transition temperature of 7 K with 0.5 K width for as-grown crystals, has been obtained.
