    Notes: An experiment demonstrating the production of a "radius-tailored beam,'' which has a larger head and smaller tail for more stable propagation through gas, using a fast rise-time focusing coil is described. The results and their analyses for the radius-tailored case, the untailored case, and the "reverse-tailored'' case are presented. A two-dimensional particle simulation of the experiment was performed for each case using the parameters of the experiment for the inputs and it produces results consistent with the experiment.

    Notes: Diocotron stability properties of relativistic non-neutral electron flow in a planar magnetron are investigated within the framework of the cold-fluid-Maxwell equations. The eigenvalue equation for the extraordinary-mode waves in a relativistic velocity-sheared electron layer is obtained, and is solved in the massless, guiding-center approximation. Approximating the electromagnetic field in the anode resonator by the lowest-order mode, the dispersion relation for the diocotron instability is obtained. Although the tenuous beam approximation is assumed, the eigenvalue equation and corresponding dispersion relation are both fully electromagnetic, and valid for relativistic electron flow. The dispersion relation is numerically investigated for a broad range of system parameters. From numerical calculations of the dispersion relation, it is shown that the typical growth rate of the diocotron instability indicates a strong instability. The early evolution of the diocotron instability as an important precursor to the evolution of the full magnetron oscillation is discussed.

    Notes: The emission of atomic oxygen lines at 130.2 and 130.5 nm from a microhollow cathode discharge in argon with oxygen added indicates resonant energy transfer from argon dimers to oxygen atoms. The internal efficiency of the vacuum-ultraviolet (VUV) radiation was measured as 0.7% for a discharge in 1100 Torr argon with 0.1% oxygen added. The direct current VUV point source operates at voltages below 300 V and at current levels of milliamperes. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The effect of high fields produced during space–charge neutralization of an electron beam is demonstrated by production of relativistic electrons (≈0.6 MeV) from a simple, small hollow cathode source operated at 20 kV. Acceleration occurs during a well-characterized, repeatable, glow-type transient plasma phase. The accelerating electron beam is produced within the device, and the total number of (approximately-greater-than)0.5 MeV electrons is estimated to be ≤1010. A model correlating time dependence of the transient plasma with energetic electron production is discussed. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: By applying electrical pulses of 20 ns duration to xenon microplasmas, generated by direct current microhollow cathode discharges, we were able to increase the xenon excimer emission by more than an order of magnitude over direct current discharge excimer emission. For pulsed voltages in excess of 500 V, the optical power at 172 nm was found to increase exponentially with voltage. Largest values obtained were 2.75 W of vacuum-ultraviolet optical power emitted from a single microhollow cathode discharge in 400 Torr xenon with a 750 V pulse applied to a discharge. Highest radiative emittance was 15.2 W/cm2. The efficiency for excimer emission was found to increase linearly with pulsed voltages above 500 V reaching values of 20% at 750 V. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A "radius-tailored'' electron beam, which is tapered with a larger head and a smaller tail, has been generated. This has been accomplished by injecting the electron beam into a fast rise-time magnetic focusing coil, so that the beam head expands while the beam body and tail are confined by the axial magnetic field. Time-resolved beam radius measurements indicate that a beam radius tailoring on the order of 3 to 1 has been achieved. This result is also in agreement with computer simulations.

    Notes: A retail packaging system was used to study the atmosphere modification which developed within sealed packages of prepared broccoli florets with a range of polymer films of different gas permeabilities (oxygen permeability 3000–32,500 ml/m2/day/atm). Three methods of sealing were investigated and modified atmospheres (MA) were produced both naturally by respiration and by application of gas flushing techniques. The effects of these MA conditions on sensory quality were observed by monitoring colour change and development of off-odours. A 2–3% O2, 2–3% CO2 equilibrium MA was established using LF film to package broccoli florets when stored at 5°C. This, the only consistently aerobic MA attained, did not markedly improve retention of quality of broccoli florets when compared with broccoli stored in air. When broccoli florets were packaged with films which resulted in very low O2 atmospheres (1% or less) foul of-odours shortened broccoli storage life.

    Notes: A retail package system was used to study the atmosphere modification which developed within packages of shredded Iceberg lettuce, sealed in trays with a range of polymer films of different gas permeabilities (oxygen permeability of 3000 to 10,000 ml/m2/day/atm. at 25°C). Modified atmospheres were produced both naturally by respiration, and by application of gas flushing techniques.The effects of these modified atmosphere conditions on visual and sensory quality of shredded lettuce was observed by monitoring colour change and development of off-odours. An equilibrated modified atmosphere containing 1–3% O2 and 5–6% CO2was established with 35 um low density polyethylene film after flushing with 5% O2, 5% CO2 in N2. This resulted in a shelf-life of approximately 14 days at 5°C, almost double that of the controls.
