    Notes: 1. Studies of hyporheic microbial ecology have suggested an important role for hyporheic microbial processes in stream ecosystem functioning. Using evidence from microbial communities in other aquatic habitats, some predictions are made concerning the diversity of microbial types and microbial processes likely to occur in the hyporheic zone, and the relative importance of these various types to the hyporheic ecosystem.2. It is predicted that the biofilm growth form of interstitial micro-organisms will create a variety of microniches, allowing coexistence of a great diversity of microbial types, and promoting the activity of some otherwise poor competitors. It is further predicted that the confluence of reduced groundwaters and aerobic surface waters will favour chemolithotrophic processes in the hyporheic zone, but that these will contribute significantly to hyporheic production only if surface water is very low in dissolved organic carbon, or the groundwater is extremely reduced, such as by the influence of riparian wetlands. A variety of anaerobic respiratory pathways, such as nitrate, ferric ion, sulphate and even methanogenic respiration will be employed in the hyporheic zone, with biofilm dynamics permitting these to occur even in aerobic sediments. Anaerobic pathways may account for a significant proportion of total hyporheic organic matter mineralization.3. The role of fungi in hyporheic dynamics is, as yet, almost completely unstudied. However, it is expected that they will be important in breaking down buried particulate organic matter (POM), which may account for a large proportion of total stream POM.4. Physicochemical conditions in hyporheic sediments appear to be highly heterogeneous, and this heterogeneity may be very important in the cycling of certain nutrients, especially nitrogen, which involves a series of steps requiring different conditions.5. Various new techniques are now available by which biofilm dynamics and in situ microbial processes may be measured. Studies are recommended of intact microbial communities both at the microscale of the biofilm and at the scale of the heterogeneities occurring in hyporheic sediments. Studies are needed that measure actual rates of microbial processes under in situ conditions.

    Notes: A device for measuring the oil content, by a dielectric method, of fish and fish products is described. The construction of a test cell suitable for such measurement is outlined together with techniques for initial extraction of the sample. Results for oil content obtained both by the dielectric method and by soxhlet determination are reported for herring, kipper and fish meal. The instrument was designed to be robust, direct reading and simple to operate, agreement with soxhlet within 1% fat was obtained.

The equilibrium water vapour pressure of frozen cod has been measured and found to be equal to that of ice at the same temperature. the concentration of solutes in unfrozen cod, calculated from a plot of the fraction of unfrozen water remaining and the relative lowering of the vapour pressure of supercooled water to that of ice at the same temperature, is equivalent to a 1.34% solution of sodium chloride. This value is in good agreement with values obtained by other workers.

    Notes: The application of readily available solid state gas sensors to the measurement of the trimethylamine and dimethylamine content of fish and fish products is described. The method provides data with an accuracy and precision which are adequate for many purposes, especially for screening relatively large numbers of samples and has the advantage of being cheap and requiring only a small amount of sample. Some other potential applications of the gas sensors are also discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Growth of barley (Hordeum vulgare L., cv. Georgie) was insensitive to soil K content above about 150 mg kg−1, but at lower levels it declined. The reduction in yield was greater in soils containing approximately 10 mg Na kg−1 than in soils with about 90 mg kg−1 of Na. Growth was unaffected by changes in shoot K concentration above 75 mol m−3, but declined at lower concentrations, and the decrease was less in plants grown in soils with high Na. Growth responses were not simply related to tissue K concentrations because plants grown in soils with extra Na had higher yields but lower K concentrations.When soil Na was low, plants accumulated Ca as tissue K declined, but when Na was provided this ion was accumulated. Plant Mg concentrations were generally low but increased as K decreased. The Ca and Mg were osmotically active. There were highly significant inverse linear relationships between yield and either the Ca or Mg concentrations in the shoots.X-ray microanalysis was used to examine the compartmentation of cations in leaves from barley plants (cv. Clipper) grown in nutrient solutions with high and low K concentrations. In plants grown with 2.5 mol m−3 K, this was the major cation in both the cytoplasm and vacuole of mesophyll cells. However, in plants grown with 0.02 mol m−3 K it declined to undetectable levels in the vacuole, although it was still detectable in the cytoplasm. In all plants, Ca was mainly located in epidermal cells. The implication of the results for explaining responses to K. in terms of compartmentation of solutes is discussed.
