Notes: Delta-sleep-inducing peptide (DSIP) stimulates the release of Met-enkephalin (Met-ENK) from superfused slices of the rodent lower brainstem in vitro. In our present study, DSIP (10–10–10–9M) induced a significant release of Met-ENK from medullary synaptosomes of rats. This DSIP-evoked release of Met-ENK was Ca2+ dependent and tetro-dotoxin (TTX) insensitive. Furthermore, DSIP (10–11–10–9M) significantly increased 45Ca2+ uptake in medullary synaptosomes. These results demonstrate that DSIP acts directly on the nerve endings of Met-ENK-containing neurons to release this pentapeptide by generating a Ca2+ influx into these neurons. Effects of DSIP on Met-ENK release in other discrete brain regions were also studied. Significant DSIP-evoked Met-ENK release from synaptosomes was observed in the cortex, hypothalamus, and midbrain (at concentrations of 10–10 and 10–9M) and in the hippocampus and thalamus (only at 10–9M), but not in the striatum. In the hypothalamus, the release of Leu-enkephalin from its synaptosomes was slightly, but not significantly, enhanced by DSIP (10–10–10–8M). Our findings demonstrate that DSIP triggered a Ca2+ influx in nerve endings to induce a subsequent release of Met-ENK from neurons in only certain brain regions.

Notes: The purpose of this study is to prepare high-quality TiO2 thin films for dye-sensitized solar cellsusing the electrophoresis method. A high-quality TiO2 thin film has a thickness of approximately 10μm and no crack on the surface. In this study, TiO2 thin films were deposited by changing theconfiguration of electrophoresis electrodes. When electrodes were set parallel to horizontal and ITOglass substrate was set in the upper electrode, an excellent TiO2 thin film of approximately 10 μmthickness was obtained by depositing very thin TiO2 films as a buffer layer. The new film has thehighest open-circuit voltage and short-circuit current density

Notes: The frequency dependences of the complex permeability μr*, complex permittivity εr*, and returnloss were investigated for composite electromagnetic wave absorbers made of soft magneticmaterials (permalloy or sendust) and polystyrene resin. For permalloy, two types of particle shapewere used: grain-type or flake-type. The volume mixture ratio of magnetic materials was varied inthe range from 40 % to 70 %. The values of the real part μ ’ and imaginary part μ ” of μr* increasedwith increasing mixture ratio of magnetic materials. The frequency dependence of μr* for flake-typepermalloy composite was similar to that for sendust composite. All absorbers showed the absorptionof electromagnetic waves in the frequency range above 1 GHz

Notes: Composite electromagnetic wave absorbers made of a soft magnetic material (permalloy or sendust)and polystyrene resin were investigated [1]. The volume mixture ratio of magnetic material was variedin the range from 18 vol% to 75 vol%. The composites with the low volume mixture ratio ofsoft magnetic material absorbed more than 99 % of electromagnetic wave power in the frequencyrange from 1 GHz to 10 GHz. The values of the real part [removed info]r’ of the relative complex permeability [removed info]r*for both magnetic materials were less than unity at frequencies above approximately 6 GHz as thevolume mixture ratio of magnetic material increased. This result suggests the possible realization ofan electromagnetic wave absorber that can operate above 10 GHz

Notes: It is found through simulation that composite electromagnetic wave absorbers made of Ni-Zn ferriteand SiO2 particles, which are isolated in the continuous medium of Ni-Zn ferrite, show goodabsorption. In particular, absorbers show absorption in the frequency regions both below and above1 GHz for the mixing ratio of SiO2 of 80 mol%. To simulate the complex permeability of thecomposite materials, we considered some arrangements of SiO2 in the Ni-Zn ferrite medium.Measured values of complex permeability are close to simulated ones above 1 GHz

Notes: TiO2 thin films for the dye sensitized solar cell have been deposited by the electrophoresis methodusing the ultra fine particles of TiO2. To adsorb much dye molecules on the TiO2 film, electrophoresis method and vacuum impregnation have been tried. The quality of TiO2 thin film andthe amount of the dye molecules adsorbed on the thin film affect the energy conversion efficiencyof the dye sensitized solar cell. The condition to adsorb large amounts of dye molecules on the TiO2film was discussed. The values of open-circuit voltage and short-circuit current increased using bothvacuum impregnation and electrophoresis method to adsorb dye molecules

Notes: Abstract: The aim of this study was to compare postprandial hemodynamic changes observed during assumption of the recumbent posture and upright posture in patients with cirrhosis and portal hypertension. Eleven patients with cirrhosis and portal hypertension were studied. Echo-Doppler examinations were performed to measure flow volume in the portal vein (PV), superior mesenteric artery (SMA), and splenic artery (SA) in the fasting condition. Collateral blood flow was indirectly calculated by determining the difference between the sum of SMA, SA, and PV blood flows. After these measurements were done, each patient received a standardized liquid meal and was then randomly assigned to either maintain supine or upright posture, in a crossover design, on 2 different days (recumbent day and upright day). On each study day, the above-mentioned measurements were repeated 30 min and 60 min after the meal. PV blood flow increased significantly after the meal on the recumbent day (P 〈 0.01) but not on the upright day (P = 0.78). Although there were significant postprandial increases in SMA blood flow on both study days (P 〈 0.01, P 〈 0.01), the effect was less pronounced on the upright day than on the recumbent day (P 〈 0.01). Postprandial SA blood flow showed no change on the recumbent day (P = 0.64), but decreased significantly on the upright day (P 〈 0.01). The calculated postprandial collateral blood flow increased significantly on the recumbent day (P 〈 0.05), but showed no change on the upright day (P = 0.53). These results suggest that the upright posture blunts postprandial splanchnic hyperemia in patients with cirrhosis and portal hypertension.
