    Notes: Abstract Ninety-six clinical isolates ofPasteurella, Actinobacillus and related organisms were submitted to our reference laboratory for identification. The procedures for detecting the 11 identified species,Pasteurella multocida, Pasteurella haemolytica, Pasteurella ureae, Pasteurella pneumotropica, Actinobacillus lignieresii, Actinobacillus equuli, Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, Haemophilus aphrophilus, Cardiobacterium hominis, and two unnamed species of CDC groups, HB-5 and EF-4, are described and their clinical importance is discussed. These organisms have been increasingly isolated in Japan and are most often associated with respiratory infections and endocarditis.

    Notes: Abstract The aerobic bacterial flora of the intestine of 150 wall geckos (Hemidactylus brookei) was investigated. A variety of bacteria was recovered including 35 isolates of Salmonella and several other species of Enterobacteriaceae, viz. Shigella sonnei—2, Edwardsiella tarda—4, Enterobacter spp—8, Citrobacter freundii—3, Serratia marcescens—3, Proteus spp—35, Klebsiella pneumoniae—13, and Escherichia coli—17, isolates. Eight Salmonella serotypes were identified, the predominant ones being S. hvittingfoss and S. typhimurium. The significance of these findings for the spread of human enteropathogens is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract The nameKlebsiella ornithinolytica sp. nov. is proposed for a group ofKlebsiella strains referred to previously as NIH Group 12 at the National Institute of Health, Tokyo. The members of this species are Gram-negative, encapsulated, nonmotile rods with the general characteristics of the familyEnterobacteriaceae and of the genusKlebsiella. They give positive results in tests for indole production, Voges-Proskauer, citrate utilization, lysine and ornithine decarboxylases, urease, β-galactosidase, malonate utilization, growth in KCN, and esculin hydrolysis, and they produce acid and gas fromd-glucose, and acid froml-arabinose, cellobiose, lactose, melibiose, raffinose, rhamnose, sucrose, trehalose,d-xylose, adonitol,d-arabitol, myo-inositol, sorbitol, arbutin, salicin, α-methyl-d-glucoside, and mucate. They give negative drolysis, DNase, pectinase, and acid production fromd-arabinose, melezitose, and dulcitol. They can grow at 4°C and 42°C, and do not produce any pigment. DNA relatedness of eight strains ofKlebsiella ornithinolytica to three strains including the type strain of this species averaged 88% in reaction at 75°C. DNA relatedness to the already recognizedKlebsiella species inEnterobacteriaceae was 1 to 20%. Phenotypic and DNA relatedness data also indicated that a group of organisms referred to as Enteric Group 47 orKlebsiella Group 47 at the Centers for Disease Control (Atlanta, Georgia) was identical withK. ornithinolytica. The type strain ofK. ornithinolytica is NIH 90-72 (JCM 6096).

    Notes: Abstract The name Enterobacter cowanii sp. nov. is proposed for a group of organisms referred to as NIH Group 42. Members of this species are Gram-negative, motile rods conforming to the definition of the family Enterobacteriaceae. The DNA relatedness of nine strains of NIH Group 42 to the proposed type strain of this species averaged 85% at 70°C, whereas the relatedness to other species within the family Enterobacteriaceae was less than 38%. Because the DNA relatedness (5–38%) is closer to species of the genus Enterobacter than to other species of the family, the members of NIH Group 42 were placed in the genus Enterobacter. The majority of strains of E. cowanii were isolated from clinical specimens. A culture of the type strain (888-76) has been deposited in the Japan Collection of Microorganisms as JCM 10956.
