Notes:
Summary A design study for a prosthesis and operative procedure for the total replacement of the ankle was begun in the Biomechanics Unit of Imperial College in May 1972. As an initial simplification of the problem, it was decided only to replace the horizontal portion of the articular surface of the tibia and the dome of the talus. The joints between the talus and the malleoli were therefore to be left largely untouched. A prosthesis was sought which could be inserted through an anterior capsulotomy, which would provide a range of movement of 35°, and which would be implanted upon the bony surfaces used for a conventional arthrodesis.
