    Notizen: Methods for bonding propellants based on HTPB (hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene) to modern rocket motor case materials have been studied. Thus a typical rocket propellant liner, based on HTPB, was adhesion tested to various polymer materials and to an aluminum alloy. The polymer materials are an epoxy resin and composite materials, based on epoxy-poly(ether sulfone), poly(ether ether ketone), poly(amide imide), and poly(phenylene sulfide). With proper surface treatment, excellent results were obtained at separation tests for all materials with cohesive failure in the liner.

    Notizen: A method is described for continuously following a long-duration process in a complex polymeric system by isothermal calorimetry. Computerized models for slow physical or chemical processes have been applied to calorimetric runs under different conditions and these have given information in the form of thermodynamic and kinetic data. The method also gives a means of determining the relationship between molecular weight and functionality for one of the polymers used, the order of reaction, and the degree of conversion before the start of the measurements. An example is given of a kinetic study of the reaction of hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene with two different diisocyanates. The temperature dependence of the formation of urethanes, the rate constants, and the degree of conversion before the start of the measurements were determined as well as the heat of reaction for the formation of urethanes using hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) and isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) as curing agents. The results have been compared with other kinetic studies of these systems.

    Notizen: Mixing and curing experiments with suspensions of boron in hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) have been performed. In kneading experiments on a plastograph very high viscous masses with bad curing properties were obtained. The experiments indicated that HTPB is attached with its OH groups to acidic impurities on the surface of the boron powder. By adding a basic substance, such as octadecyl amine, mixing and curing were undertaken with much less difficulty.
