Notes:
Inspired by an earlier work by Smalley, Turcotte & Solla (1985), in this paper we consider a fault consisting of large sets of asperities with a statistical distribution of strength. It is argued that the principle of equal-load-sharing between asperities, inside a segment, is necessary to account for the stick-slip behaviour. This principle is responsible for amplifying—or damping—the effective probability for the displacement of crustal blocks. the antecedents of this idea in the seismological literature are commented on.
