In order to analyze the properties of the ideal lines of thermodynamic parameters use is made of some analytical equations of state, approximate integral equations of the theory of liquids, and computer simulations data. The findings of this study reveal that the ideal lines are not linear functions in the density–temperature phase diagram as was previously believed. It is also shown that the nonlinear behavior of the ideal lines is associated with the structure of the fluid, that is with the inherent features of correlation functions in different domains of the phase diagram. Changes from one linear branch of the ideal line to another are found to occur in the vicinity of the Fisher–Widom line, around which the asymptotically monotonic damping of the total correlation function alters to damping oscillations. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.
