    Notes: Summary The morphology of toxoplasma and its interaction with the cellular elements of the brain were studied in a patient who died of extensive cerebral toxoplasmosis superimposed on Hodgkin's disease. The cerebral lesions were devoid of inflammatory cellular response and contained numerous organisms mostly in isolated multiplying forms in neurons, glia and vascular walls. Encysted forms containing multiplying organisms were seen infrequently. Intracellular parasite was identified in normal-appearing neuropil. The mode of multiplication and cyst formation of toxoplasma appeared basically similar to that described under experimental conditions. In addition, a rapid evolution of the cerebral lesions was suggested by computerized tomography. This study suggests that tissue necrosis in human cerebral toxoplasmosis is the result of an increased rate of multiplication and enhanced cellular invasiveness of the parasite most likely related to impaired cellular immunity as has been postulated by clinical and experimental data.

    Notes: Abstract A total of 2203 Nigerian school-age children (10–19 yr) were examined clinically for the presence of oral anomalies. The following prevalence figures were found: commissural lip pits (2.9%), ankyloglossia (0.2%), geographic tongue (0.3%), fissured tongue (0.8%), torus palatinus (4.5%), torus mandibularis (1.9%), snowcap type amelogenesis imperfecta (0.2%), localized enamel hypomaturation (11.7%), missing lateral incisors (0.7%), and peg lateral incisors (1.5%). None of the following conditions was found: cleft chin, cleft lip, double lip, medium rhomboid glossitis, bifid tongue, macroglossia, cleft palate or cleft lip and palate.

    Notes: A bilateral ossified stylohyoid ligament was observed in a cadaver specimen. On the left side, the stylohyoid chain was markedly enlarged. The stylohyoid ligament was completely ossified into two segments separated by a diarthrodial-like joint. An articulation was also observed between the enlarged styloid process and the ossified ligament. On the right side, the styloid process had a normal appearance. The middle part of the stylohyoid ligament was ossified and it was attached to the styloid process and to the hyoid bone by a fibrous band. Proposed theories to account for the ossification oaf this ligament are discussed. Since the presence of an enlarged and ossified stylohyoid chain can cause much discomfort and pain, a greater understanding of the causative factors responsible for this anomaly is needed to provide for more effective diagnosis and treatment. © 1995 WiIey-Liss, Inc.
