Notes:
Summary The comparative electron microscopic studies of various vessels with active contractility — Vena portae (rat), mesenteric lymph vessels (guinea-pig and bat), veins of the flying membrane (flying-fox)—show for this type of vessel—in spite of a different structure of vascular wall in particular—certain features of fine structure which are related to the special activity, more closely examined in the vena portae (rat). Thus all examinated spontaneously contractile vessels miss a complete Elastica interna. The endothelium regularly contains intraplasmatic filaments, which are interpreted as tonofilaments. The closely connected smooth muscle cells whow a high micropinocytotic activity. Compared with non-contractile control vessels they have moreover a greater content of mitochondria, which manifests itself above all in the accumulation of this organells near the nucleus together with ergastoplasm, Golgi complexes and free ribosomes. In regard to the other fine structural characteristics as for occurence of thick myofilaments ( Ø 120–180 Å) observed in contracted vessels rapidly fixed in glutaraldehyde, dense bodies, attachment plaque areas and the kind of innervation, the autonomously contractile vessels differ only slightly from those without this functional speciality.
