Notes:
Summary 1. Horizontal and vertical temperature gradients in the immediate surrounding of the subjects (microclimate) as well as the skin temperature of the forehead, the hand and the foot, furthermore the rectal temperature and the arterial pressure of human volunteer subjects were investigated in lecture rooms climatized with two different systems. The one system called “pulpit jet system” worked by blowing temperature and humidity controlled air into the room from a slit on the front edge of each desk and the other system called “horizontal jet system” operated by introducing a horizontal air jet from the backward upper corner of the wall in forward direction. The subjects and students after the lectures were asked to give a subjective evaluation of the climate. 2. The temperature distribution in the lecture rooms in horizontal and in vertical direction using the pulpit jet was found to be homogeneous and constant with time. If the system was correctly applied no draught was observed. The horizontal temperature distribution using the horizontal jet was not homogeneous neither was the temperature constant over a period of time. Vertical temperature gradients, however, were satisfying. Draughts were frequently experienced. The pulpit jet, therefore, may be preferred to the horizontal jet. 3. The rectal temperatures and the arterial pressures did not deviate systematically in the total range investigated between 16 and 28 ° C ambient temperatures. 4. The temperature of the skin of the forehead is linearly dependent upon the ambient temperature in the total investigated range. The slope is 0.57. The dependence of the skin temperatures (foot and hand) upon ambient temperature is similar only in the range above 24 ° C: slope hand 0.59, foot 0.69. In cooler ambient temperatures continuous temperature decreases on the hand and foot are observed which even in increasing room temperatures are either not interrupted at all or not before several hours have elapsed. This is considered as indicative of vasoconstriction which causes further cooling of the skin and reinforces itself in a positive feedback. This process is discussed as a part of a simplified scheme of the temperature regulation. The limit of ambient temperature, below which vasoconstriction occurs coincides with the lower limit of the feeling of comfort. The feeling of comfort, therefore, is defined as the absence of feelings of discomfort which are connected with the processes of temperature regulation.
