Notes: In this paper we map out the 1300°C isothermal section in the Ti–In–C ternary system. Two ternary compounds exist: Ti2InCα and Ti3InCδ. At 1300°C TiCx is in equilibrium with all phases, Ti3InCδ is in equilibrium with all the phases except C, and Ti2InC is in equilibrium with all phases except Ti and C. The range of δ in Ti3InCδ varies from 0.95 to 0.8. A correlation was found between δ and the lattice parameters of this phase. The maximum solubilities of In and C in Ti are 14 and 4 at.%, respectively. Similarly, α in Ti2InCα varies from ≈0.85 to 1. The dissolution of ∼4±0.3 at.% In in TiCx reduces the C concentration to ≈24 at.%. In the In-rich corner, a liquid region exists.

Notes: Abstract Typical thick film pastes applied for the metallization of AlN-ceramics are glass bonding systems. The glass phase responsible for adhesion onto the ceramic unfortunately also acts as a heat barrier and impairs the excellent thermal conductivity of AlN. A new glass frit free conductor paste has been especially developed for the metallization of AlN. A numerical analysis of the stress distribution within the metallized ceramic induced by a continuous as well as a pulsed mode operating heat source has been conducted for this new metallization paste and, for comparison purpose, also for a standard thick film paste by means of a finite element program. In order to determine the physical property data of the phases occurring at the interface between metallization and substrate required for numerical simulation the relevant intermetallic samples have been synthesized.

Notes: Abstract Solid-state bonding at pressureless-sintered SiC has been carried out using 25-μm Cr foil at temperatures from 1373 to 1773 K for 1.8 ks in vacuum. The formation of reaction phases and microstructures at the interface between SiC and Cr was investigated by X-ray diffraction and microprobe analysis. At the bonding temperature of 1373 K the cubic Cr23C6phase formed next to Cr, and the hexagonal Cr7C3 phase formed next to SiC. At 1473 K the cubic phase Cr3SiCx appeared additionally on the SiC side. At 1573 K the complete diffusion path was established. Upon increasing the joining temperature beyond 1573 K all the chromium was consumed, and Cr23C6 and Cr3SiC x dissolved. A layered structure consisting of SiC/Cr5Si3 C x /Cr7C3/Cr5Si3 C x /SiC occurred.

Notes: Abstract SiC was bonded to SiC using V foil at temperatures ranging from 1473 K to 1673 K for 1.8 to 64.8 × 103 s and 30 MPa in vacuum. Interfacial reactions and microstructures were investigated using electron probe microanalyser and X-ray diffractometer. SiC begins to react with V at temperatures above 1473 K. Granular V2C phase was formed at the V side of the reaction zone, while a layer of V3Si phase was formed at the interface between V2C and SiC after bonding at 1573 K for 1.8 and 7.2 × 103 s. The same reaction structure can be observed at 1473 and 1673 K for 1.8 × 103 s. Hexagonal V5Si3Cx (X 〈 1) phase was formed at the interface between V3Si and SiC after bonding at 1573 K for 14.4 and 21.6 × 103 s, and the interface structure of the joint became SiC/V5Si3Cx/V3Si/V2C + V/V. This microstructure represents a complete diffusion path which is correlated with the corresponding Si-V-C phase diagram. At the longer bonding time of 64.8 × 103 s, V was completely consumed, and the joint showed the layer structure of SiC/V5Si3Cx/V3Si/V2C/V3Si/V5Si3Cx/SiC.

Notes: Abstract Specimens made of Long Discontinuous Fiber (LDF™) composite material were elongated to different states of deformation by thermoforming. Tension-tension-fatigue tests were performed using waisted bidirectional specimens cut out of the thermoformed parts. These resulted in similar shapes of the Wöhler-curves fairly independently of the deformation state of the LDF™-material. In addition, the static strength values were not very much influenced by the elongation of the specimens. The specimens were nondestructively inspected by ultrasonics and thermography.

Notes: Abstract Bonding of AlN to Ti was performed at high temperatures in vacuum. The bonding temperature ranged from 1323 to 1473 K, while the bonding time varied from 7.2 up to 72 ks. The reaction products were examined using elemental analysis and X-ray diffraction. TiN, Ti3AlN (τ1), and Ti3Al were observed at the AlN/Ti interface, having various thickness at different bonding conditions. The thickness of TiN and Ti3AlN layers grew slowly with bonding time. On the other hand, growth of the Ti3Al layer followed Fick’s law. The activation energy of its growth was found to be 146 kJ mol-1. When thinner Ti foil (20 μm) was joined to AlN at 1473 K for a long time (39.6 ks), the Ti central layer has completely consumed and another ternary compound Ti2AlN(τ2) started to form. A maximum bond strength was achieved for an AlN/Ti (20 μm) joint made at 1473 K for 28.8 ks, after which the bond strength of the joint deteriorated severely.

Notes: Abstract Privatisation, decentralisation and devolution are three ideas in good currency that have permeated the debate on cultural policy over the past fifteen years. They are typically used as if there were a broad consensus as to their meanings and implications, but, in fact, these three words stand in for a much more complicated set of views and understandings of appropriate directions to take in cultural policy. This article considers the various motivations for each of these interrelated ideas and demonstrates that a precise and nuanced knowledge of policy intent is critical to understanding their implications for policy. Whatever words are used to describe a particular place's cultural policy, if the intent of that policy is concealed, intentionally or unintentionally, in a vocabulary whose implications are neither clearly spelled out nor fully appreciated, it will be impossible to know exactly what is to be done and how it is to be judged.
