    Notes: 1 Summary Cu2+ adsorbs onto modified bone gelatin beads as a function of pH. The amount of Cu2+ adsorbed is similar to that which has been shown to be adsorb onto other biological materials including bacterial biomass. Langmuir adsorption isotherms were fitted to this data and both the asymptotic maximum solid-phase concentration and the equilibrium constant for these isotherms are presented as a function of the solution pH. The adsorption rate for a typical set of experimental conditions is presented.

    Notes: Differential equations were derived to describe the system characterized by a rapid, irreversible reaction of a fluid species in a flowing fluid with a fixed bed of solids in which the reaction rate was controlled by mass transfer of the reacting fluid from the bulk fluid to the reaction site in the solid. Two kinds of mass transfer resistances were assumed, external or film diffusion resistance, and internal pore diffusion resistance. The set of differential equations were solved by a finite-difference method for both the generalized case and for the specific case of reaction of hydrogen in a stream of helium with fixed beds of copper oxide pellets.The hydrogen-copper oxide reaction is one step in a proposed method for removal of hydrogen as a contaminant in the helium coolant of nuclear reactors. This reaction was experimentally investigated in tests with both differential and deep beds of copper oxide in the temperature range of 400 to 600°C., at pressures of 10.2 to 30.0 atm., with gas mass flow rates of 0.0050 to 0.050 g./sq.cm.-sec, and with inlet hydrogen concentrations of 0.0008 to 1.21 vol. %. These tests showed that the system could be described by the two rate-limiting steps: film and pore diffusion of hydrogen. Differential-bed tests were used to establish hydrogen transport properties within the porous copper oxide pellets, and tests with deep beds were used to establish external mass transport properties.Generalized breakthrough curves were determined by a computer solution of the mathematical model. These curves can be the basis for design of fixed-bed copper oxide oxidizers for gas-cooled, nuclear reactor purification systems and for design of any fixed-bed system which follows the assumed reaction mechanism.

    Notes: Reactor systems based on tapered fluidized beds are being developed for aqueous bioprocesses in which adhering microorganisms or immobilized active biological fractions are used. The use of a fluidized bed prevents biomass buildup, accommodates particulates in the feed stream, is compatible with gas sparging, and allows easy removal or addition of the active materials. The tapered reactor tends to stabilize the fluidized bed, thus allowing a much wider range of operating conditions. Preliminary experimental results and an empirical mathematical model of the tapered bed indicate that bed stability is associated with a decreasing velocity and void-fraction profile up the bed and the pressure drop across the bed decreases with increasing flow rates.The tapered fluidized bed bioreactor is being evaluated for use in the enzymatic production of hydrogen, microbiological denitrification, and microbiological degradation of coal conversion aqueous waste streams. The enzyme catalyzed conversion of lactose to glucose and galactose was used in the evaluation of the reactor concept.

    Notes: A bioreactor configuration is proposed for simultaneous fermentation and separation of the desired product. The bioreactor consists of a columnar fluidized bed of immobilized microorganisms. Denser adsorbent particles are added to this column. These adsorbent particles fall through the bed, absorb the product, and are removed from the base of the columnar reactor. The system hydrodynamics and the separability of the two types of particles were confirmed for low-density gel beads. The addition of the adsorbent, activated carbon, to a fermentation of Lactobacillus delbreuckii absorbed lactic acid. The addition of adsorbent enhanced the fermentation and controlled the pH.

    Notes: Various types of microbial biomass have been shown to adsorb metals dissolved in aqueous media. It has now been demonstrated that certain plant tissues are also effective for this type of adsorption process. In particular, tomato and tobacco roots harvested from field-grown plants were shown to adsorb Sr from an aqueous solution of SrCl2. Distribution coefficients in excess of 550 were measured and the adsorption isotherms at 25°C could be fitted to Langmuir-type expressions. The bioadsorbent could be regenerated and metals recovered by either a reduction in the pH to less than 2.0 or by use of a concentrated chloride salt solution.
