Notes: All the nine elastic constants of the orthorhombic crystal lithium hydrazinium sulfate, Li(N2H5)SO4, have been determined by measuring ultrasonic velocities using pulse echo overlap technique at 10 MHz. Temperature variation of all the six diagonal elastic constants and the three off-diagonal combinations have been measured between 300 and 450 K. Some of the constants show anomalous behavior in the 410–440 K temperature region, which is attributed to a phase transition in the crystal near 425 K. Magnitude of the velocity anomaly is comparatively small. A new high-temperature ultrasonic bond material suitable for transverse waves is also reported.

Notes: X-ray diffraction studies are made on ion-conducting potassium titanyl phosphate (KTP) crystals with in situ DC electric field along different crystallographic directions. The X-ray rocking curves recorded with an electric field along the polar b axis (which is the direction of ion conduction) show a strong enhancement of the 040 reflection intensity (reflecting planes normal to the b axis) whereas the h0l reflections (reflecting planes parallel to the polar axis) do not show any intensity change. For an electric field normal to the polar axis no intensity change, either in 040 or in h0l reflections, occurs. This observation is supplemented by X-ray topography. The 040 X-ray topographs recorded with in situ electric field along b exhibit strong extinction contrast in the form of striations parallel to the polar (ion-conduction) axis. The 040 intensity increase and the striation contrast are attributed to lattice deformation by the space-charge polarization due to the movement of the K+ ions under the influence of the electric field.

Notes: X-ray diffraction studies are made on proton conducting polar lithium hydrazinium sulfate and ferroelectric lithium ammonium sulfate. The X-ray rocking curves recorded with in situ electric field along the polar b axis of lithium hydrazinium sulfate (direction of proton conductivity) show a strong enhancement of the 0k0 diffraction intensity. The corresponding 0k0 X-ray topographs reveal extinction contrast consisting of striations parallel to the polar axis. They disappear when the electric field is switched off. The effect is very strong in 0k0 but invisible in h0l reflections. It is present only if the electric field is parallel to the polar axis b. This unusual X-ray topographic contrast is correlated with the proton conduction. It is supposed that, under electric field, an inhomogeneous charge distribution develops, distorting the crystal lattice. Similar experiments on lithium ammonium sulfate also show contrast variations, but of quite different behaviour than before. In this case they result from changes of the ferroelectric domain configuration under electric field.

Notes: X-ray topographic studies are made on vacuum-swept α-quartz crystals. A strong defect contrast is observed on X-ray topographs near the anode side of the crystal. This contrast disappears when the crystals are subjected to prolonged X-ray irradiation. The presence of this unusual contrast is attributed to lattice strains due to the collection of space charges near the anode side during vacuum sweeping. The negative space charge so formed is compensated by forming Al-OH and Al-hole centres during irradiation.

Notes: Abstract Ba3Ln3Ti5Nb5O30 (Ln=La, Nd) ceramics were prepared by the conventional solid-state ceramic route. The sintered samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) methods. They have high dielectric constants, 141 and 203 at 13 MHz for La-based and Nd-based ceramics, respectively. The loss factor of the ceramics increases with frequency.

Notes: Abstract Microwave ceramic dielectric resonator materials in the BaO-TiO2-Nb2O5Ta2O5 system such as BaTiNb4O13, BaTiTa2Nb2O13, BaTiTa4O13, Ba3Ti4Nb4O21, Ba3Ti4Ta4O21, Ba3Ti5Nb6O28, Ba3Ti5Ta6O28 and Ba3Ti5Nb3Ta3O28 have been prepared by the conventional solid state ceramic route. They have relatively high dielectric constant and high quality factor. The resonator materials are characterized by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) methods. The BaTiNb4O13Ba3Ti5Nb6O28 and Ba3Ti5Nb3Ta3O28 have small temperature variation of the resonant frequency and are possible microwave dielectric resonator materials for practical applications.

Notes: Abstract Ceramic dielectric resonators in the BaO-RE2O3-TiO2 (RE=rare earth) system have been prepared by the conventional solid state ceramic route. The dielectric properties have been tailored by substitution of different rare earth oxides and by bismuth oxide addition. The dielectric constants increased with Bi addition whereas the Q decreased. The temperature coefficient of the resonant frequency improved with bismuth addition.

Notes: Abstract Single crystals of the non-linear optical material KTiOPO4 (KTP) have been grown using a new KBa2(PO3)5⋅2K2O flux, which produced faster growth than existing fluxes. Crystals of size 6 mm×4 mm×2 mm were grown from the flux in a day. Perhaps relatively large crystals may be grown commercially in a short time.

Notes: Abstract New dielectric ceramics with formula BaTi3Nb4O17 and Ba6Ti14Nb2O39 have been prepared and characterized. BaTi3Nb4O17 was densified to 92% of TD after firing at 1310 °C for 4 h. However, Ba6Ti14Nb2O39 fired under optimized conditions (1260 °C for 4 h) showed only 85% TD together with secondary phase. The crystal system of both of the compositions is orthorhombic. The BaTi3Nb4O17 has εr∼56, Qu∼2100 (at 4.402 GHz), τf∼+86 p.p.m. K-1 and Ba6Ti14Nb2O39 as εr∼50, Qu∼650 (4.359 GHz) and τf∼+165 p.p.m. K-1. © 1998 Kluwer Academic Publishers
