Notizen: Regional employment cycles, the demand for skilled and unskilled labor, and process innovations are analyzed in the context of an industry product cycle. Employment fluctuations caused by endogenous technological change lead to spatial decentralization of production facilities through capital relocation and spatial divisions of labor. A capital investment profile suggested by the product cycle scenario is related to employment cycles. A price system for output is outlined in terms of wages and profits over the product cycle.

Notizen: In this paper I analyze the spatial-economic determinants of export competition. I develop a competing central place spatial interaction model to analyze the spatial availability of information, market power, distance, demand threshold, and interregional market variables. Model estimates are based on national data from The Dartmouth Atlas of Health Care, and I examine Medicare health exports from the Seattle hospital market to markets throughout the Pacific Northwest. Information availability and market power for the Seattle export hospitals have a significant effect on export sales of hospital Medicare services. Intra and interregional competition with other major hospital markets are significant determinants of export competition. Distance to the Seattle market has a strong, negative effect on export sales and on patient migration from other markets.

Notizen: Abstract. The spatial availability of information as a determinant of consumer choice and export sales is analyzed along with other spatial-economic determinants of export competition. A spatial interaction framework is applied to two alternative specifications; a pair-wise model of information dominance and a spatially dispersed information model for consumers located in different market areas. Model estimates of the role of spatial availability of information, market power, distance, and population demand thresholds on export sales are based on national data from The Dartmouth Atlas of Health Care. The regional application is for Medicare health exports from the Seattle hospital market to markets throughout the state of Washington. Information availability increases export sales of hospital Medicare services with the strongest impact occurring for the pair-wise model of information dominance. The spatially dispersed information model shows a smaller and less significant impact of information availability on export sales. Distance between Seattle and export markets has a strong, negative effect on export sales and on intra-regional patient mobility. Market power within the Seattle center exerts a positive impact on sales and mobility.

Notizen: Abstract Expenditure limitations on state government in the form of legislated spending rules have become an increasingly popular approach to restricting the size of the government sector. The longrun growth implications for government spending are not clear, however, since the legislative wording and quantification of the rules do not distinguish between nominal and real growth in critical benchmark variables. This paper analyzes the long-term growth implications of spending rules for a number of states in terms of, a) real and nominal changes, b) cyclical variations in government spending under conditions of inflation and deflation, and c) changes in the demand for state government output over time.

Notizen: Abstract Job offers requiring varying commuting times to work from inner-city areas and the reservation wages for a sample of young Chicano job seekers are examined. A logistic probability model of job acceptance using the minimum wage as an acceptance-rejection cutoff in relation to the reservation wage data is estimated by maximum likelihood techniques and suggests that the level of schooling is an important determinant of the probability of job acceptance. The results of this analysis suggest a restriction on the geographic range of job acceptances to the extent that minimum wage job offers located away from inner city, minority neighborhoods would most likely be rejected by the sample of minority youth job seekers.
