    Notes: Abstract. We present three cases of breast lesions labeled as probable intramammary lymph nodes that showed an increase in size on follow-up mammography. Contrast-enhanced MRI was performed and the three lesions showed strong and rapid uptake of the intravenous contrast. Core needle biopsy established the diagnosis of lymphoid hyperplasia in all three patients. Because intramammary lymph nodes affected by benign processes can present findings similar to malignant lesions, the usefulness of contrast-enhanced MRI in these cases is controversial.

    Notes: Abstract. The objective of this study was to assess the usefulness of stereotactic large-core needle biopsy (LCNB) in the management of nonpalpable breast lesions (NBL) and compare it with stereotactic fine-needle aspiration biopsy (SFNA) performed simultaneously in a significant number of cases. From November 1993 through June 1997, 510 consecutive patients with NBL underwent 14-gauge LCNB with 354 women undergoing simultaneous 21-gauge SFNA in the same lesion. Mammographic findings, lesion size, number of core biopsy specimens, complications and diagnoses of both techniques were analysed. Surgical biopsy, tumorectomy or mastectomy was indicated for malignancy or poor correlation between SFNA or LCNB results and clinical or radiological findings. Values of diagnostic accuracy of both LCNB and SFNA were determined. The ratio benign surgical biopsies/malignant surgical biopsies (BB/CB) of the series was calculated. A total of 171 patients underwent surgical treatment; in 31 (18.1 %) a benign process or atypical ductal hyperplasia was the final diagnosis. The ratio BB/CB was 0.22. Sensitivity and specificity were 93.2 and 100 %, respectively, for LCNB, and 77.2 and 92.3 %, respectively, for SFNA with cytological analysis. Large-core needle biopsy provides more accurate diagnosis than SFNA in the management of nonpalpable breast lesions and obviates a surgical diagnostic procedure in a significant number of cases.

    Notes: Abstract Two HLA-identical twin sisters are reported, of whom one has remained essentially asymptomatic, and an episode of hypotonia and decreased level of conciousness being the only relevant clinical finding in the other. Organic acid analysis revealed that ethylmalonate was constantly, although sometimes only slightly, increased. No abnormal acylglycines or acylcarnitines could be detected. Enzyme assay in cultured skin fibroblasts confirmed short-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency. Conclusion The lack of appropriate biochemical markers for this deficiency makes the diagnosis difficult and consequently, the low number of patients described may be the result of underdiagnosis.

    Notes: Shock waves and plasma dynamics induced by an open discharge called a "formed-ferrite-plasma'' source result in intense radiation from the visible to the vacuum ultraviolet region. An experimental study of both the shock waves and plasma expansions from the ferrite surface has been carried out as a function of electrical energy deposition and of background argon pressure. We show that the propagation of the shock wave is accurately described by the following expression: R=b(E/ρ0)αtn, where R is the distance of the shock front from the surface of the ferrite; E the deposited energy; ρ0 the density of background gas; b, α, and n three constants, and t the time.

    Notes: Surface stability during laser pulsed melting of polymers and ceramics is studied theoretically. Irradiation conditions and material parameters are found giving rise to the suppression of surface wavy relief of a nonresonant type (with period Λ(very-much-greater-than)λ, where λ is the radiation wavelength) and thus to the smooth flat irradiation spots. For example, for the polymers considered this process takes place for wavelengths where the absorption coefficient is sufficiently high: α(λ)(approximately-greater-than)105 cm−1. Thus, it is shown that the formation of such spots, previously referred to as "clean ablation,'' can be explained using only a thermal mechanism without reference to the concept of "photodecomposition.'' Moreover, laser smoothing and polishing of a surface, if it had roughness before irradiation, can be achieved by appropriate matching of the characteristic size of this roughness along the surface with the values of α(λ) and laser fluence. Methods are proposed to decrease the parasitic influence of droplets on the deposition of thin films by laser ablation of massive ceramic pellets. The results of theoretical modeling are shown to be in good agreement with experiments on smoothing of rough alumina ceramics and "clean'' processing of polymers by excimer laser radiation. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A study of radiative properties of formed-ferrite discharge driven by a new electrical circuit scheme with a prepulse initiation has been carried out. With the prepulse electrical initiation, we demonstrated that the jitter time of main discharge onset can be decreased from a few tens of microseconds to ∼0.1 μs allowing us to synchronize a number of formed-ferrite discharges switched in parallel. Discharge plasma surface radiation characteristics in the spectral region of the XeF2 photodissociation band (140–180 nm) were measured by the dynamic actinometry method. The plasma surface radiation intensity is 2.3×1023 photons/cm2 s in 10 μs which corresponds to a brightness temperature of 22 000 K. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: An analytical thermal model of ultraviolet (UV) laser ablation has been proposed. The approximation used to describe the absorption of the incident beam in excimer laser induced ablation plasma, for the case of single-photon absorption σeff(t)=const. (where σeff is the effective absorption cross section of ejected species) gives analytical results on UV laser ablation kinetics. In particular, the changing (increasing or decreasing) slope of the curve of etch depth, z, versus logarithmic fluence, ln E, is explained. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The design and performance is described for a high-temperature cell appropriate for kinetic and spectroscopic studies on electron-beam or electrical-discharge excited species emitting in the vacuum ultraviolet. The experimental setup operates at temperatures up to 750 K for total gas mixture pressures of up to 5 bar. Particularly, the apparatus permits investigations on the emission spectra and their temporal behavior of ionic excimer molecules after excitation with these two most-common gas laser-excitation techniques. The comparison of the quantum efficiency for the production of the vacuum ultraviolet emissions with both excitation techniques, together with the possibility to perform optical gain measurements, will allow us to evaluate whether lasing for this new class of molecules can be achieved. The performance of the experimental device is presented by investigations on the second continua of the rare gas. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We report a photoluminescence study of silicon nanoclusters produced by laser ablation. It was found that by varying the preparation parameters it was possible to change the mean cluster size in the range 1–5 nm. Within this size variation, the photoluminescence band shifts in a wide spectral region from near ultraviolet to near infrared. This size-dependent photoluminescence of Si nanoclusters is consistent with a quantum confinement effect. The observed influence of cluster oxidation on the luminescence properties also supports the quantum confinement interpretation. We proposed a discrete size model which supposes that the spectral position of the luminescence band is essentially determined by the volume of clusters with a complete outer atomic layer. In the framework of this model, we were able to deconvolute the observed luminescence bands into a set of fixed Gaussian bands. The model is supported by the observation of a size selective doping of Si nanoclusters whose effect was well explained by Auger recombination. Finally, our model allowed us to obtain a dependence of the optical gap on the cluster size which is in good agreement with existing calculations of Si nanocrystal electronic structure. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
