Notes: Abstract Epithelially expressed type II collagen is thought to play a prominent role in the embryonic patterning and differentiation of the vertebrate skull, primarily on the basis of data derived from amniotes. We describe the spatiotemporal distribution of type II collagen in the embryonic head of the African clawed frog, Xenopus laevis, using whole-mount and serial-section immunohistochemical analysis. We studied embryos spanning Nieuwkoop and Faber (1967) stages 21–39, a period including cranial neural crest cell migration and ending immediately before the onset of neurocranial chondrogenesis. Xenopus displays a transient expression of type II collagen beginning at least as early as stage 21; staining is most intense and widespread at stages 33/34 and 35/36 and subsequently diminishes. Collagen-positive areas include the ventrolateral surface of the brain, sensory vesicles, notochord, oropharynx, and integument. This expression pattern is similar, but not identical, to that reported for the mouse and two bird species (Japanese quail, domestic fowl); thus epithelially expressed type II collagen appears to be a phylogenetically widespread feature of vertebrate cranial development. Consistent with the proposed role of type II collagen in mediating neurocranial differentiation, most collagen-positive areas lie adjacent to subsequent sites of chondrogenesis in the neurocranium but not the visceral skeleton. However, much of the collagen is expressed after the migration of cranial neural crest, including presumptive chondrogenic crest, seemingly too late to pattern the neurocranium by entrapment of these migrating cells.

Notes: Summary Potassium and glucose were measured simultaneously after i.v. injection of 3 mg glucagon in the hepatic vein and the aorta of six patients. In two patients, the measurements were performed in the coronary sinus. Immediately thereafter an increase of the potassium concentration was observed. In the hepatic vein the potassium level rose earlier and attained higher values than in the aorta. Three minutes later, the potassium concentration decreased in the aorta as well as in the hepatic vein.—The hyperglycemia due to glucagon occurred later than the hyperkalemia and was also higher and earlier in the hepatic vein than in the aorta. Our findings indicate that glucagon causes a netpotassium-efflux from the liver in man.—The secondary persistent hypokalemia after glucagon may be regarded as the consequence of a stimulated insulin secretion.

Notes: Abstract The present work deals with the assembly of multilayers or rod-like polymers with hydrophobic side chains (called hairy rods) and their potential application as ultrathin polymer cushions for the build-up of self healing supported membranes on various solids (Si/SiO2-wafer, gold covered substrates). Three types of hairy rods were studied: Isopentyl cellulose (IPC), phtalocyaniatopolysiloxane with mixed alkane side chains (PCPS) and trimethylsilane cellulose (TMCS). Detailed analysis of the thickness of supported multilayers as a function of the number of deposited monolayers with ellipsometry, near infrared surface plasmon resonance (NIR-SPR), a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) and reflection interference contrast microscopy (RICM), show that the basic building blocks of hairy rod multilayers are bilayers with the hydrophobic surfaces of the monolayers facing each other. Continuous and stable firms of hairy rods can be deposited if the hydrophobicities of the solid surface and the monolayer are matched. It is demonstrated by lateral diffusion measurements (using photobleaching techniques) that continuous phospholipid bilayers can be deposited onto multilayers of rigid rods of TMCS after hydrophilization by cleavage of trimethylsilane side chains in HCl-vapour, while stable lipid monolayers can be deposited onto hydrophobic surfaces of rigid rod layers. NIR-SPR allows the observation of double band reflectivity curves at interfaces separating different surface layers and thus offers the possibility of differential detection of ligand binding at the interface of differently functionalized domains.

Notes: The concentrations of 25 trace elements have been determined in 15 international standard rock samples by isotope-dilution spark source mass spectrometry (ID-SSMS). This technique yields reliable data down to the ppb concentration range. The agreement between most of our data and recommended values is within 10%. However, for reference samples with low trace element contents (BIR-1, NIM-N, PCC-1, DTS-1), differences between our data and the literature can be as large as a factor of 80.

Notes: Trace element concentrations in BIR-1 basalt have been determined by isotope dilution-spark source mass spectrometry, high performance liquid chromatography and laser ionization mass spectrometry. Of particular interest are the low abundance elements Nb, Ta, Zr, Hf, Th, U, Rb, Cs for which published data vary extremely. Our analyses of most trace elements in four different batches of BIR-1, however, agree within 10% indicating that these large differences cannot be caused by heterogeneities of the powders but may be attributed to analytical problems. Based on own and recently published data, an attempt is made to assign “preferred values” for BIR-1 which are at variance with several published consensus or working values by as much as a factor of 110.
