Notes: A stable Kalman filter predictor (KFP) is developed which generates minimum variance estimates of the future outputs {y(t + i | t), i = 1, … d} of stochastic, single-input/single-output processes with time delay, d. The predicted outputs are used for time delay compensation and in the design of a predictive feedback controller. An innovation model analysis is used to convert the state space formulation to transfer function form and to show the relationship between the KFP, the Smith predictor, and the internal model controller. A modified KFP includes a disturbance model, and eliminates offset due to deterministic disturbances (e.g., steps) and modeling errors. Simulation results show that the modified KFP also predicts the disturbances and gives significantly better performance than the Smith predictor, particularly in the presence of process and measurement noise.

Notes: The design and development of a mu8ltirate software sensor for use in the chemical process industry are presented. The measurements of process outputs that arrive at different sampling rates are formally accommodated into the estimation strategy by using rhwe multirate formulation of the iterated extended kalman filter. Measurement delays associated with some of the process outputs are included in the system description by addition of delayed states. Observability issues associated with state and parameter estimation in a multirate framework are discussed and modified measurement equations are proposed for systems with delayed measurements to ensure relatively “strong” system observability. The evaluation of the proposed multirate state and parameter estimator through simulations and an experimental application on afed batch fermentation system gave satisfactory performance.

Notes: The issue of modeling and control of multivariable chemical process systems using the dynamic version of a popular multivariate statistical technique, namely, projection to latent structures (partial least squares or PLS) is addressed. Discrete input-output data are utilized to construct a projection-based dynamic model that captures the dominant features of the process under study. The structure of the resulting model enables the synthesis of a multiloop control system. In addition, the design of feedforward control for multivariable systems using the dynamic PLS framework is also presented. Three case studies are used to illustrate the modeling and control of multivariable linear and nonlinear systems using the suggested approach.
