Notes: Abstract In this paper we investigate the axisymmetric harmonic torsional vibrations of a rigid spherical inclusion, embedded centrally in an elastic stratum of finite thickness. For an infinite solid the problem has a simple closed form solution. Here the stratum problem is formulated as a Fredholm integral equation of the first kind, and a perturbation method employed to solve this equation approximately for large values of the ratio of sphere radius to stratum depth. Approximations are given for quantities of physical interest such as the stress distribution at the inclusion-elastic medium interface, and the stress couple on the sphere.

Notes: Summary In this paper we consider the problem of calculating the resistive torque on a disk rotating slowly with constant angular speed in the surface of a liquid with an adsorbed surface film. Using the method of complementary representations for generalised axially symmetric potential functions, the boundary-value problem for the azimuthal velocity component is reduced to the solution of a Fredholm integral equation of the second kind. This equation is solved numerically and asymptotically for all values of the ratio of the surface shear viscosity of the film to the viscosity of the substrate fluid, and values calculated for the substrate and film torques on the disk. The results are compared with previous work of Goodrich and his co-workers.

Notes: Abstract Solutions are given to a number of asymmetric Stokes-flow problems which involve the slow motion of a fluid in the presence of a rigid plane containing a circular hole. The particular instances of motion generated by a linear shear flow along the plane and by a Stokeslet, placed on the axis of symmetry of the hole and oriented perpendicular to this axis, are examined in detail. The paper concludes with a solution to the shear-flow problem when the circular hole is replaced by one of elliptical geometry.

Notes: Summary This paper continues the work of Shail and Gooden [1–4] on the motion generated in a semi-infinite fluid by a singularity or submerged solid moving particle when the surface of the fluid is contaminated with a surfactant film. The fluid motion is assumed to be slow and quasi-steady, but the restriction to axially symmetric flows of earlier investigations is removed. The various linearised models of Shail and Gooden [3,4] governing the variation of film concentration are discussed, the constitutive properties of the film being expressed in terms of Boussinesq coefficients of surface shear and dilatational viscosities. The resulting film boundary conditions are applied to solve the non-axially symmetric problem of a Stokeslet placed in the bulk fluid with its axis parallel to the surface (assumed planar throughout the motion), and the results used to calculate approximate expressions for the resistive force on a particle which translates far from and parallel to the surface. A similar analysis is given for the case of a rotelet whose axis is parallel to the surface.

Notes: Abstract This paper investigates the axisymmetric sedimentation of a small slowly rotating and translating particle through a fluid-filled circular pore of finite length which communicates with two half-space chambers of fluid. In the quasi-steady Stokes approximation the particle is modelled by either a rotlet or Stokeslet, and potential-theoretic methods are used to reduce each problem to the solution of coupled infinite systems of linear equations. The numerical solutions of these sets of equations are used to compute approximations to the resistive torque and drag experienced by the particle.

Notes: Abstract Using a method first applied to some fluid dynamical two-phase flow problems [1], the authors derive expressions for the warping and stress functions describing the St. Venant torsion of some compound cylinders. The construction of the cylinder must have appropriate symmetries, and composites containing both two and four different elastic phases are considered. Effective shear moduli and torsional rigidities are defined, and some tables of numerical values given for various configurations. An analogous solution for the antiplane strain of a two-phase composite is also given.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract The Giessen Nappe of the south-eastern Rhenish Massif can be subdivided into a northern group and southern group of Frasnian-?Lower Carboniferous greywackes that differ slightly in their sedimentology, clast petrography, heavy mineral assemblages and bulk geochemistry. Petrographic and geochemical tectonic setting discrimination diagrams indicate that both the northern and the southern Giessen Greywacke groups were derived from a predominantly acidic continental arc source. However, due to the nature of basin development, generation of significant volumes of acidic arc material as a result of southwards directed subduction of Rhenohercynian oceanic crust is considered unlikely. A large part of the arc source may have been contributed by earlier, predominantly acidic, Precambrian terranes together with minor basic igneous and sedimentary components.
