    Notes: The pulsatile discharge of luteinizing hormone (LH) in nine patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCO) and nine patients with amenorrhoea but without PCO, who exhibited LH discharge in response to oestrogen provocation, were studied by 4-h measurement of gonadotrophin pulsatility before and after a course of progesterone injections. No significant differences were found in the gonadotrophin pulsatility patterns of the two groups, although the LH/FSH ratio rose significantly in the patients without PCO after progesterone but not in the patients with PCO, suggesting an abnormality of FSH storage. The ability to discharge gonadotrophins in response to oestrogen provocation has been reported to be present in patients with 〈inlineGraphic alt="geqslant R: gt-or-equal, slanted" extraInfo="nonStandardEntity" href="urn:x-wiley:14700328:BJO457:ges" location="ges.gif"/〉3 LH pulses in a 4-h study period. This, however, was not demonstrated in five of the nine PCO patients despite the presence of ‘normal’ gonadotrophin pulsatility patterns.

    Notes: Abstract During their attempts at stabilization, the central authorities in a federal system often face the prospect of lack of co-operation by junior levels of government. In the context of a macroeconometric model of the Canadian economy, this paper presents a framework for assessing the importance of junior government behavior to the outcome of centrally directed stabilization policies. The results do not confirm the view that the success of these policies requires nonfederal government co-operation. Relatively extreme assumptions about discretionary nonco-operation by junior jurisdictions are needed to conclude stabilization by the central authorities would not work at all simply because of this lack of co-operation.

    Notes: Abstract This paper presents a simple macroeconomic model that includes all of the main channels of transmission for fiscal policy and that can generate either Keynesian or monetarist results for the impact of fiscal policy depending on the values assumed for particular parameters. The structure of this model, called KEMO for KEynesian-MOnetarist, was kept very simple and schematic. The objective of this paper is to examine through simulations of the model the degree of sensitivity of the fiscal multiplier to certain hypotheses concerning the way the economy functions and the value of certain parameters, as well as the dynamic process of adjustment of the economy to a fiscal shock.

    Notes: Abstract Using a simple integrated Keynesian-Monetarist model, this paper highlights some of the major factors which hinder the large Canadian macroeconomic models from achieving the neutrality and homogeneity properties. An analysis of these factors reveals that, whereas the large models can be modified to produce the neutrality property, it can not be expected that these models also demonstrate the homogeneity property, i.e. that change in the money supply be fully reflected in changes in nominal GNE.

    Notes: Abstract This study evaluates the species richness, phenology and effect of environmental factors on the composition of canal and drain vegetation in the Nile Delta, Egypt. Altogether, 365 stands were sampled along the terraces, slopes, littoral zones and water zones of 28 canals and 10 drains. Smooth species compositional changes were found in the first three zones. The slope plant community has the highest total number of species and species richness and a medium value of species turnover. The water zone has the lowest values of these variables. The number of species with seedlings and vegetative plants had two peaks: one in winter and the second in summer, which was related to the contrasted behaviour of the winter and summer weeds. The number of species with vegetative and fruiting plants was relatively higher, while the number with dormant plants was relatively lower in the canal vegetation when compared to that of the drains. The number of species with vegetative, flowering and fruiting plants increased with the decrease of canal-drain width.

    Notes: The Boundary Element Method is now well established as a valid numerical technique for the solution of field problems, equal to the Finite Element Method in generality and surpassing it in computational efficiency in some cases.1 In this paper is presented a 'Regular Boundary Element Method' as applied to inviscid laminar fluid flow problems. It involves the formation of a system of regular integral equations obtained by moving the singularity outside the domain of the given problem. It is also shown that non-conforming elements may be used whereby freedoms are not defined at the geometric nodes under the boundary element discretization. A linear element is developed here; higher order variants could easily be defined. Satisfactory numerical results have been obtained using the proposed regular method with both conventional (continuous across the boundary) and non-conforming boundary elements for two-dimensional inviscid laminar fluid flow problems having regular and singular solutions.

    Notes: A Regular Indirect Boundary Element formulation is developed following a weighted residual approach. In this formulation, the fictitious source density, which appears in the integral equations of the method, is distributed on a surface which is exteriorly separated from the physical field boundary of the problem. This approach does not require the evaluation of singular integrals and produces undeteriorated solutions at geometric discontinuities. The formulation is presented here as applied to two dimensional and axisymmetric thermal problems. It includes a different subregioning scheme which treats each subregion, of a multidomain problem, separately, thereby eliminating the need for a sophisticated reduction scheme.
