Notes: Abstract We reviewed the records of 17 patients with posterior uveal malignant melanoma who had been followed for at least 3 months prior to cobalt plaque radiotherapy and whose tumor had been documented to enlarge in thickness during that interval. We evaluated the relationship between the rates of pretreatment tumor enlargement and post-treatment tumor shrinkage using linear regression analysis. We found that the rate of postirradiation tumor shrinkage correlated strongly with the rate of preirradiation tumor enlargement regardless of whether the pretreatment rate of growth was slow, intermediate or rapid. We speculate that the more rapidly regressing tumors were more mitotically active than their more slowly regressing counterparts. If true, the survival rate of patients whose posterior uveal malignant melanomas regress rapidly following radiation therapy may prove to be worse than that of patients whose tumors regress slowly.

Notes: Abstract Our aim was to use MRI for the postsurgical assessment of a new form of integrated orbital implant composed of a porous calcium phosphate hydroxyapatite substrate. We studied ten patients 24–74 years of age who underwent enucleation and implantation of a hydroxyapatite ball; 5–13 months after surgery, each patient was examined by spinecho MRI, with fat suppression and gadolinium enhancement. Fibrovascular ingrowth was demonstrated in all ten patients as areas of enhancement at the periphery of the hydroxyapatite sphere that extended to the center to a variable degree. The radiologist should aware of the MRI appearances of the coralline hydroxyapatite orbital implant since it is now widely used following enucleation. MRI is a useful means to determine successful incorporation of the substrate into the orbital tissues. The normal pattern of contrast enhancement should not be mistaken for recurrent tumor or infection.

Notes: Abstract The medical records, CT, and MRI of ten children with trilateral retinoblastoma were reviewed. The intracranial pathology consisted of eight pineal neoplasms and two parasellar lesions, at least seven of the which were calcified. Two lesions demonstrated calcification only (no soft tissue mass) at initial presentation. Hydrocephalus was seen in eight cases, and concurrent or subsequent subarachnoid dissemination was documented in seven. Only one patient is known to be alive at the present time. The imaging features of the midline intracranial tumors mirror those of the ocular neoplasm. As calcification may be the only clue to the presence of the intracranial malignancy, close surveillance of high-risk patients with retinoblastoma with initial CT and follow-up MRI is suggested.

Notes: Summary High temperature (240°C) contact treatment was shown to be a very effective method of stabilizing panels bonded with heat resistant adhesive. Chemical analyses of post treated boards indicate that chemical changes of the wood components due to contact heat treatment were negligible. The results support the concept that high temperature post treatment of boards at temperatures above the softening points of lignin and carbohydrate components, caused plastic flow in situ which relieved internal stresses built up during hot pressing. Consequently, springback in wood-based composites diminished leaving panels much more stable than conventional products. Also, dimensionally stable wood-based composites had a better inherent ability to withstand severe exposure conditions than the regular boards.

Notes: Summary The springback of compressed wood caused by built-up internal stresses results in excessive thickness swelling of wood-based composites when exposed to moisture. Steam pretreatment can cause partial hydrolysis of hemicellulose for both hardwoods and softwoods which markedly increases the compressibility of wood and in turn significantly reduces the build-up of internal stresses in composites during hot pressing. This steam pretreatment process is a very effective method for producing dimensionally stable wood-based composites. Mild steam pretreatments (e.g. 3 to 4 min at 1.55 MPa) cause a significant reduction of the water insoluble xylan content in hardwoods and the amount of xylan, mannan and galactan in softwoods without any apparent changes in the cellulose or lignin content.

Notes: Abstract High frequency phonons are produced by the thermalization of photoexcited electronhole pairs in a semiconductor. Inelastic and elastic scattering processes determine the frequency down-conversion and diffusion of this thermal energy. Simple estimates of the anharmonic and isotope scattering processes suggest that the acoustic phonons will undergo a quasi-diffusive propagation process. In particular, non-equilibrium phonons high-resolution phonon-imaging experiments presented here show well defined ballistic pulses and sharp phonon-focusing caustics. We explain this discrepancy in terms of a phonon hot spot which acts to efficiently down-convert the high-frequency phonons very near the excitation spot. We present the first measurements of the size of a phonon hot spot, which depends upon excitation power.

Notes: Abstract Ballistic phonon flux in crystals at low temperatures is highly directional due to phonon focusing. In this paper, a phonon-imaging experiment is reported which shows that scattered phonons, too, can retain a highly directed flux. Basically, the combination of phonon focusing and the elastic-scattering selection rule act to channel phonons along the ballistic focusing directions. Together with Monte Carlo simulations, the experiments show that the scattered phonon flux is indeed due to elastic scattering processes, which depend on the polarizations of the scattering phonons. Isotropic scattering is inconsistent with the data. The experimental technique shows promise for quantifying the microscopic scattering processes and revealing the dynamics of a phonon hot spot.

Description / Table of Contents: Cellulose wurde mit ultraviolettem Licht bestrahlt.
Notes: Cellulose has been irradiated by ultraviolet light. The degradation was followed viscometrically and by weight loss measurements. The changes in the degree of Polymerization and weight of the irradiated material indicated that the degradation is random and follows first order kinetics. It is suggested that chain scission is the primary process yielding glucose and oligosaccharides. Gas chromatography of the volatile products indicated the presence of acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde, methyl formate, acetone, methanol, ethanol, methane and ethane which have not been reported in earlier studies. These compounds could result from further degradation of glucose and oligosaccharides formed during the initial chain scission process.
