    Notes: Abstract Based on the equation recently determined, formation pressures of skarn-type ore deposits were estimated from the composition of sphalerite coexisting with pyrite and hexagonal pyrrhotite. As criteria for equilibrium among sphalerite, pyrite and hexagonal pyrrhotite, the following three points were carefully checked on each specimen: 1) the presence of hexagonal pyrrhotite, 2) no time sequences among the formation of sulfide minerals, and 3) no compositional variation in sphalerite. Most of the Cu-Fe skarn deposits studied were formed under pressures of more than 1 kb, whereas Zn-Pb(-Cu-Fe) deposits tend to have formed at relatively shallow environments, namely under less than 1 kb. The calculated pressures are qualitatively consistent with the depth of formation of deposits estimated from the geological evidences. The sphalerite geobarometry is quite sensitive even at low pressure ranges, and it is applicable to the deposits formed under shallow conditions.

    Notes: Abstract On the basis of experimental works in the FeS-FeO-SiO2(-Fe3O4 or -Na2O) system with synthetic ZnS or PbS, the partition of zinc and lead between silicate and sulfide liquids is shown to be affected by the oxygen content of the sulfide liquids. The partition coefficients K, metal wt. % in sulfide liquid / metal wt. % in silicate liquid, for zinc and lead go through a minimum at relatively low oxygen contents of the sulfide liquids. KZn and KPb for natural sulfide liquids in equilibrium with basic magmas near the earth's surface are estimated at 0.1–0.5 and greater than 10, respectively. Although KZn and KPb change appreciably with oxygen content of the sulfide liquids, they never become sufficiently high to concentrate zinc and lead in economic amounts in magmatic sulfide ores.

    Notes: Aims:  The third edition of the World Health Organization (WHO) classification of lung tumours has been published and is expected to become the standard nomenclature. The aim of this study was to assess the usability and prognostic significance of the WHO classification in comparison with other recent classifications.Methods and results:  One hundred and forty-seven resected pulmonary adenocarcinoma cases were reviewed and histologically classified according to the WHO classification (1999) and the classification by Noguchi (1995). Papillary carcinomas as described by Silver and Askin (1997) were also identified. Since the papillary type in the WHO classification is not strictly defined, we compared the following two kinds of WHO classification: (i) WHO-N; WHO classification adopting Noguchi Type F as the definition of the papillary type, namely, pure papillary adenocarcinoma without a bronchioloalveolar component; (ii) WHO-SA; WHO classification adopting papillary carcinoma by Silver and Askin as the definition of the papillary type, namely, tumour with papillary structure constituting at least 75% of the lesion. The bronchioloalveolar carcinoma of the WHO classification showed a better prognosis than other subtypes in both overall and Stage I disease limited survival analysis. In analysis limited to Stage III disease, only the papillary type of WHO-SA showed a significantly worse prognosis.Conclusions:  WHO-SA is recommended for prognostic correlation.

    Notes: Lung carcinoma with rhabdoid cells: a clinicopathological study and survival analysis of 14 cases Aims: We determined the clinicopathological features of primary lung carcinomas with rhabdoid cells by defining the immunophenotype of rhabdoid cells and analysing survival. Methods and results: Rhabdoid cells are distinctive in having an eccentric nucleus and a large intracytoplasmic inclusion on routinely stained sections. Based on the number of rhabdoid cells, 45 cases of large cell carcinoma were divided into the following three types: lung tumour with a rhabdoid phenotype (LTRP) (n=4), lung carcinoma with a small number of rhabdoid cells (LCSR) (n=10), large cell carcinoma containing no rhabdoid cells (LCNR) (n=31). LTRP is composed of at least 10% rhabdoid cells. In LCSR the percentage of rhabdoid cells is less than 10%. LTRP and LCSR are associated with locally advanced disease. Immunohistochemical stains were positive for epithelial markers in all LTRP and eight LCSR, for neuroendocrine markers in one LTRP and three LCSR. The outcome is worse for patients with LTRP than LCSR or LCNR. LCSR shows a trend close to LCNR. Stage-matched survival analysis, however, revealed no statistically significant difference among the histological subtypes. Conclusions: Rhabdoid cells are heterogeneous except for epithelial markers and vimentin positivity. Less than 5% of rhabdoid cells has a negligible effect on prognosis.

    Notes: It is common knowledge that Mg is very light and high specific strength material. But there is a problem that Mg alloy easily burns during its machining, because the ignition point of Mg is 700K.[1] The ignition point of new Mg alloy to which Ca is added is about 1000K. This new Mg alloy is called non-combustible Mg alloy. As a result, many inclusions exist in Mg alloy. Then, fatigue test was carried out and gave evidence that inclusions have an effect on the fatigue strength. Thenrelationships between size of inclusions and fatigue limit were drawn. Therefore, the fatigue limit can be predicted by estimating the maximum inclusion size. The method of estimating the maximuminclusion size is “Estimation for particle size distribution in materials“[2]

    Notes: Abstract Pyrite and arsenopyrite are the predominant ore minerals in the Korean Au-Ag deposits of this study. The X Ni py , X Co py , X Ni apy , and X Co apy values range between 100 and 3,000 ppm, 200 and 6,000 ppm, 200 and 8,200 ppm, and 100 and 10,200 ppm, respectively. Most X Ni py /X Co py values fall in the field lower than values varying 0.16–1.30. Arsenopyrite also tends to prefer cobalt rather than nickel showing X Ni apy /X Co apy values between 0.20 and 1.40. The concentrations of minor elements in ores and gangue minerals vary 1–55 ppm Au and 1–1,120 ppm Ag for the former and 4–57 ppm Ni and 2–45 ppm Co for the latter. The Au/Ag ratio in ore has a good correlation to the Ni/Co ratio of arsenopyrite to gangue. The (Ni/Co)py-(Ni/Co)gangue and (Ni/Co)apy-(Ni/Co)gangue diagrams revealed that the values from the Korean Au-Ag deposits plot in the field lower than 900 °C which is the lowermost temperature determined by previous partitioning experiments.

    Notes: Abstract The Kamioka Zn-Pb deposits consist of clinopyroxene-rich skarns replacing limestone lenses in Hida gneissose rocks. Paleozoic metabasite, early Jurassic Funatsu granitic rocks and late Cretaceous porphyritic dikes and stocks, are the known igneous rocks in the mining area. Oxygen isotopic compositions of eight separates each of clinopyroxene and quartz from the deposits (Table 1), and some minerals and rocks from the major rock units around the deposits (Table 2), have been analyzed. The estimated oxygen isotopic ratios of the fluids responsible for the formation of the deposits, range as low as -4‰ to +3‰ (SMOW). These values are considerably lower than expected from magmatic waters, and demonstrate that none of the igneous rocks in the area could be a direct source of the skarn- and ore-forming fluids. The data instead show that the deposits are formed by a huge convective circulation of solutions of meteoric water origin, promoted by a hidden batholithic intrusion at the time of the late Cretaceous.

    Notes: Summary In order to study neuronal information transfer from the striatum to the globus pallidus (GP) during voluntary movement, we recorded activity of electrophysiologically identified projection neurons in the putamen to the GP while the monkey was performing learned movement tasks. Two categories of putamen neurons were recorded: one with tonic spontaneous discharges at about 2–7 impulses/s responded to external sensory stimuli (type I); the other with very low spontaneous discharge rates less than 0.5 impulses/s showed phasic burst discharges which were time-locked to limb or orofacial movements (type II). All of the putamen neurons identified as projecting to the GP (external and/or internal segment) by an antidromic activation from electrical stimulation of the GP were type II cells. It was concluded that the movement-related activity of type II putamen neurons is transferred to GP and/or SN during voluntary movement but tonically active type I cells do not project to the GP.

    Notes: A new continuous column culture system for adherent cells was developed using beads. The beads were packed in a column and an appropriate medium was continuously passed through. The whole system was kept under closed conditions.L cells and C6 cells were cultured by this new system. The number of cells increased linearly up to 16 days and reached a maximum at around 18 days. As the heat production remained constant for 16 days, it can be concluded that cells grown in this system had identical characteristics. The final concentration of cells reached was 1.0 × 108ml-1. The cells could grow both in the upward and the downward direction.Advantages of this system are: (1) Cells can be recovered in their adherent form on the beads; (2) cells can easily be collected from the column by trypsinization, and (3) cells remaining in the column after trypsinization can grow again.
