Notizen: Abstract The molar ratio of branched-chain amino acids(BCAA) to tyrosine (BTR), which has recently beenpossible to easily determine by an enzymatic method, canbe clinically used as a substitute for that of BCAA to aromatic amino acids (AAA). We used thismethod to investigate the diagnostic implications ofserum BTR in patients with chronic hepatitis C treatedwith interferon-α. There was a good correlation between BTR and staging (fibrosis) scores bothbefore and after treatment. BTR increased significantlyat 24 months after treatment in the responder group (P〈 0.01). Moreover, a significant increase in BTR was observed in patients with improvedstaging (P = 0.015), but not grading(necroinflammatory), scores. BTR in chronic hepatitis Cpatients seems to be reflected by the extent of liverfibrosis, and, in the responder group, it can beimproved, together with liver fibrosis, byinterferon-α treatment.

Notizen: Radical polymerization of several alkyl crotonates (RCr) was carried out in bulk or in benzene in the presence of radical initiators. Homopolymerization of RCr bearing bulky ester alkyl groups, e.g. tert-butyl (tBCr), 1-adamantyl (AdCr), and 3,5-dimethyl-1-adamantyl crotonate (DMAdCr) proceeded to give a polymer with molecular weight of several thousands despite of the steric hindrance and chain transfer by the presence of the β-methyl group, while the methyl and ethyl esters gave no polymer. The kinetics of the polymerization was examined in detail and absolute rate constants were evaluated by means of electron spin resonance spectroscopy. The propagation rate constants of RCr were 0.41-1.0 L/mol s, being much smaller than those of the corresponding methacrylates (530-570 L/mol s). The termination rate constants were also determined from the analyses of steady state and non-steady state polymerizations. Radical copolymerizations of AdCr (M2) with several vinyl monomers (M1) were carried out in bulk at 60°C and the rate constants for cross propagations were calculated to examine reactivities of the monomer and its polymer radical. The structure and thermal properties of the resulting poly (AdCr) were also investigated. Onset temperature of decomposition and glass transition temperature of poly(AdCr) were revealed to be much high as 302 and 234°C, respectively. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notizen: Abstract We tried to obtain an overview of the quantitative state of the retinal circulation. Optical density measurements by an image analyzer were performed on video fluorescein angiograms for the determination of dye-dilution curves. To ensure that curves with a sharp peak were obtained, 1 ml sodium fluorescein 10% was flushed with 20 ml physiological saline. From dilution curves of a retinal arteriole and the corresponding venule, various retinal circulation times, T (x) (x=1, 25, 50, 75, and 100) and Tm, were calculated. T(1) corresponds to the difference in the time of initial dye appearance; T(50), to the so-called half-maxim time difference; T(100), to the difference in the time to peak intensity; and Tm, to the mean circulation time. T(50) showed the best reproducibility when it was examined at 49 retinal regions of 10 healthy volunteers with a double video-fluorescein angiogram that was obtained within 1 min. Normal values (mean ± SD) at the temporal superior region of 37 healthy volunteers were as follows: T (1) = 0.87 ± 0.66 s, T(25)=1.52±0.48 s, T(50)=1.83±0.50 s, T(75)=2.12±0.56 s, T(t00) = 2.73±0.76 s, and Tm = 2.69±1.25 s. We believe that these values give a general overview of the quantitative state of normal retinal circulation.
