    Notizen: Abstract:  Background: Few studies have explored the influence of postpartum depression on later life among mothers in Taiwan. The present follow-up study aims to explore the effects of postpartum depression on the psychosocial health of mothers and on the overall development of their infants. Methods: Follow-up evaluations were carried out on 29 postnatally depressed and 31 nondepressed mothers and their infants at 1 year after childbirth. Dependent variables were measured by means of five structured questionnaires. Results: Postnatally depressed mothers reported significantly higher perceived stress, but lower social support and self-esteem than nondepressed mothers at 1 year after childbirth. The participants’ postpartum depression had no significant effect on their infants’ eight developmental areas, nor did depression influence their plans about the number of children to have in the future. Conclusions: Postpartum depression may have a negative influence on the psychosocial health of women, but it does not appear to influence the overall development of their infants and their family planning.

    Notizen: In this study, we investigated the kinetics and products of the oxidation of MoSi2 powder with an average particle size of 1.6 μm at 900°, 1000°, and 1100°C, using a small sample size of 0.5 g. Such a small sample size allowed us to minimize the effect of oxygen transportation through the powder volume, while maintaining a good relative weighing accuracy. X-ray diffraction of oxidized samples indicated the formation of Mo5Si3 and Mo metal. Analysis of the oxidation kinetics suggested that gaseous MoO3 formed initially and amorphous SiO2 film later. The oxidation kinetics and products observed in this study differ from those reported in an early study, in which a larger sample size was used.

    Notizen: A two-component system encoding gene cluster kvgAS that is present only in virulent Klebsiella pneumoniae CG43 was isolated and its sequence determined. RT-PCR and Southern analysis demonstrated that kvgAS is organized as an operon. No apparent effect of a kvgS deletion on bacterial virulence was observed in a mouse peritonitis model. In the presence of paraquat or 2,2-dipyridyl, the activity of kvgAS promoter in the kvgS mutant was found to be reduced to half of the level in the wild-type strain. The data suggest that the KvgAS system is autoregulated and plays a role in countering free radical stresses and sensing iron-limiting conditions.

    Notizen: : A deterministic hydrologic model, encompassing the hydrologic regime and all water uses, is developed by integrating empirical hydrologic relationships. The Brandywine Basin, located in southeastern Pennsylvania and northern Delaware, is used as an example to demonstrate this modeling effort. The basin is divided into 19 subwatersheds to account for the spatial variation of resource characteristics. The output of the model is the response of the hydrologic system to various inputs such as precipitation, land use characteristics and policy decisions. This modeling effort is applicable to watersheds similar to the Brandywine Basin in size, and once the model is developed and validated, can be applied continuously in the management and planning of water resources such as predicting the hydrologic effects of proposed projects and simulating hydrologic information.

    Notizen: Abstract The electronic structures of multi-decker transition metal sandwich complexes are discussed according to the structure rules for transition metal heterocarboranes. A series of skeletons of the structures Fe2C5(D5h), Ni2C5(D5h), V2C6(D6h), Co2C6(D6h), and Fe2C4(D4h) are calculated using the EHMO method. The calculated results show that the number of valence bonding orbitals (VBO) can vary as the distance between the metal atoms in the metalocenes is increased. This fact can be used to explain the number of valence electrons (VE) in triple-decker sandwich complexes. The conclusions are proved and discussed through a theoretical analysis of the electronic structures of such complexes and through EHMO calculations for actual compounds containing 29–34 valence electrons.

    Notizen: Abstract The Bayesian method of statistical analysis has been applied to the parameter identification problem. A method is presented to identify parameters of dynamic models with the Bayes estimators of measurement frequencies. This is based on the solution of an inverse generalized eigenvalue problem. The stochastic nature of test data is considered and a normal distribution is used for the measurement frequencies. An additional feature is that the engineer's confidence in the measurement frequencies is quantified and incorporated into the identification procedure. A numerical example demonstrates the efficiency of the method.
