Notizen: A two-dimensional analytical model for the effect of a nonuniform secondary electron emission coefficient (γ) on the powered electrode of a radio frequency plasma was developed. The nonuniformity was a step change in the value of γ. The ambipolar diffusion equation, including ionization by thermal and secondary electrons, took the form of a Helmholtz equation for which the solution by separation of variables was a series of cosine functions. The discontinuity of γ on the electrode engendered substantial nonuniformity of plasma density. For example, the nonuniformity at the sheath edge of an Ar plasma (50 mTorr, 200 V) was 40% for a substrate having a γ of 0.027 and resting on a platen having a γ of 1.00. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Scattered total internal reflection (SCATIR) is an optical phenomenon that allows measurement of the fly height of sliders. Good agreement between the measurements made with scattered total internal reflection (SCATIR) and the nominal fly heights (100, 65, and 25 nm) of three commercial sliders was obtained. Fluctuations in the flying height of a tri-pad slider as a function of load were observed. Applying a correction for the Gaussian profile of the incident laser revealed the crown of a 70% slider. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Measurement of linear nanometric distances between perfectly smooth plane parallel surfaces by scattering evanescent waves of internally reflected light is shown to be possible if one of the two surfaces is optically disseminative, that is, it either possesses a heterogeneous index of refraction or it is capable of absorbing and re-emitting radiation. Good agreement was obtained between the nominal 100 nm fly height of a magnetic recording slider and the 92 nm fly height measured by scattered total internal reflection. This method is simpler and more informative than interferometry or methods that employ the internally reflected beam. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Forced-convection mass transfer at the metal/bath interface during aluminum reduction from cryolitic melts was studied under reproducible convective conditions. A film of molten aluminum on a rotating molybdenum cylinder was the cathode. Concentration overpotential measured as a function of rotation rate, current density, and bath composition was converted to concentration differences between the bulk and the metal surface. Chosen as the basis for calculation of a mass transfer coefficient was the concentration of aluminum fluoride given by: \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ C_{{\rm AlF}_{\rm 3} } = \frac{{2\rho (100 - Al_2 {\rm O}_3 \% - {\rm CaF}_2 \% - IMP\%)}}{{100M_{{\rm AlF}_3} (CR + 2)}} $$\end{document} where the amounts of indicated compounds are in weight percent, IMP designates impurities, M is molecular weight, ρ is the density of the melt, and CR is the cryolite ratio, the ratio of moles NaF to moles AlF3. Agreement with a correlation for mass transfer to a rotating cylinder allowed the calculation of effective diffusivities for aluminum fluoride species, in alumina-saturated melts, of: 11.1 ± 1.1 × 10-5 cm2/s at 1.8 CR; 11.4 ± 1.7 × 10-5 cm2/s at 2.3 CR; 5.4 ± 0.8 × 10-5 cm2/s at 3.0 CR; and 4.4 ± 0.9 × 10-5 cm2/s at 4.0 CR.
