    Notes: Extracellular invertase of Rhizobium japonicum and its role in free sugar metabolism in the developing root nodules of Sesbania grandiflora L. was studied. The enzyme hydrolysed sucrose extracellularly, and its release was substrate inducible. 0.1 Mβ-mercaptoethanol released the cell-bound form of this enzyme. The production of invertase was low when glucose, galactose, mannose, fructose and raffinose were used as carbon sources in the growth medium. In the developing nodules sucrose was the major sugar. The content of fructose was low in comparison with that of glucose – suggesting that in the nodules, fructose is converted to glucose prior to its entry into the bacterial cell. The content of glucose synchronised with the pattern of change in the activity of invertase in the nodules.

    Notes: Abstract. Moyamoya disease and spontaneous internal carotid artery dissections are rare conditions, but both tend to affect young adults with potentially devastating consequences. A 43-year-old non-Japanese patient presented with neurological symptoms, which, following carotid Doppler ultrasound and angiography, was labelled as being due to a spontaneous internal carotid artery dissection. Repeat imaging at 3 months showed normalisation of the carotid Doppler findings which coincided with the formation of „moyamoya” vessels on the angiogram. This case report illustrates the changes on carotid ultrasound in early moyamoya disease which may mimic the appearances of an internal carotid artery dissection and demonstrates the change of the spectral Doppler waveform that occurs with the formation of new vessels at the base of the brain.

    Notes: Abstract. Colour Doppler US is well established for imaging of hepatic vessels in the assessment of pre- and post-liver transplant patients. Unfortunately, a full colour Doppler US examination of the portal or hepatic venous and hepatic arterial systems is frequently precluded by technical factors. Ultrasound contrast agents are useful in enhancing vascular Doppler signal and play an important role in liver transplantation assessment. A series of patients with vascular problems illustrates the role of US contrast in the pre-transplant candidate, where portal vein patency and direction of flow is assessed, presence of portal vein thrombus is confirmed and cavernous transformation demonstrated. Occlusion of hepatic veins in Budd-Chiari syndrome is confidently confirmed. Following liver transplantation, US contrast allows a comprehensive assessment of hepatic artery thrombosis, hepatic artery stenosis and pseudoaneurysm formation. The need for further imaging is reduced or confidently deferred in many instances. Ultrasound contrast agents play an important role in the liver transplant candidate.
