    Notes: In the past decade there have been major strides in the development of devices and techniques for nonsurgical lower extremity revascularization. These advances have broadened indications for endovascular therapies and expanded the treatment options for patients with peripheral vascular disease. A variety of new laser-etched steel and nitinol stent designs now complement balloon angioplasty. In the iliac segment, stenting has replaced balloon angioplasty as the first-line therapy for treatment of symptomatic occlusive disease. Stenting results in superior acute procedural success and long-term clinical efficacy compared to balloon angioplasty and is a “less invasive” alternative to surgical reconstruction. Endoluminal stent grafts offer promise in the treatment of high-risk patients with abdominal aortic aneurysms. New strategies are being developed to address the diverse nature of the superficial femoral artery (SFA) and infrapopliteal disease where balloon angioplasty, stenting, and stent graft strategies have proven unsatisfactory for treatment of diffuse disease and long occlusions. The next millennium will see the use of “therapeutic angiogenesis,” the intravascular and intramuscular administration of DNA fragments or proteins, to stimulate new vessel growth in patients not amenable to conventional surgical or endovascular therapies. Brachytherapy, the intravascular delivery of a retrievable ionizing radiation source, represents an exciting development that offers the potential of reducing restenosis in the SFA.

    Notes: This paper presents an application of the dual reciprocity boundary element method (DRBEM) to transient advection-diffusion problems. Radial basis functions and augmented thin plate splines (TPS) have been used as coordinate functions in DRBEM approximation in addition to the ones previously used in the literature. Linear multistep methods have been used for time integration of differential algebraic boundary element system. Numerical results are presented for the standard test problem of advection-diffusion of a sharp front. Use of TPS yields the most accurate results. Further, considerable damping is seen in the results with one step backward difference method, whereas higher order methods produce perceptible numerical dispersion for advection-dominated problems.

    Notes: Abstract The propagationmechanism of low latitude daytime whistlers is investigated on the basis of ground measurements made continuously during daytime in North India at Jammu (geomag. lat. 22°26°N;L = 1.17). On February 14, 1998 extremely small dispersion (ESD) whistlers with dispersion varying from 5–10 sec1/2 in surprisingly large numbers were recorded at Jammu during daytime in the late afternoon. The results of a study of the characteristics of ESD whistlers are presented and the discussion indicates that ESD whistlers recorded are the VLF waves radiated from the return stroke of the lightning discharge launched at the ionosphere with different initial wave normal angles, propagated upwards under eitherquasi-longitudinal conditions or pro-longitudinal whistler mode, turned around at different heights due to quasi-transverse propagation and received at Jammu with the dispersion of the order of 5–10 sec1/2. The validity of this suggestion has been tested by performing actualray-tracing computations in thepresence of equatorial anomaly model.

    Notes: Abstract With the advancement in molecular techniques for characterizing genes and the use of animal models as tools to study heart failure, considerable progress has been made in improving our understanding of the regulation and function of genes associated with heart failure. Studies now indicate that autocrine/paracrine factors including neurohormones such as norepinephrine, angiotensin II, proinflammatory cytokines and peptide growth factors produced locally in the heart may affect myocyte growth and function through intricate signaling mechanisms. While changes in gene expression for the proteins involved in cell signaling may lead to myocyte hypertrophy and/or apoptosis, alteration in calcium homeostasis, excitation-contraction coupling and the extracellular matrix also contribute to systolic and diastolic dysfunction leading to heart failure. Thus, heart failure is a complex process, which involves changes in expression of multiple genes. With the advent of new techniques involving microarray and gene chip technology, it is now possible to define and/or identify sets of genes involved in heart failure. The purpose of this review is to provide an overview of molecular signals, intracellular signaling mechanisms and the changes in gene expression associated with the transition from compensated hypertrophy to failure.

    Notes: Abstract The mechanisms that regulate cardiac myocyte apoptosis are not well understood. To study the role of protein phosphatase 1 (PP1) and 2A (PP2A) in apoptosis, we exposed cultured neonatal rat cardiac myocytes to the phosphatase inhibitor okadaic acid (OA). Exposure (18 h) to 100 nM OA (a concentration which inhibits both PP1 and PP2A) decreased the number of adherent cells, caused genomic DNA fragmentation, and increased the percentage of apoptotic cells. These effects did not occur at a lower concentration of OA (1 nM) which is relatively specific for PP2A. Stimulation of α1- or β-adrenergic receptors with norepinephrine (NE) in the presence of propranolol or prazosin partially blocked OA-induced apoptosis as measured by flow cytometry. Likewise, stimulation of adenylyl cyclase with forskolin reduced OA-induced apoptosis. Conversely, inhibition of protein kinase A with H89 or protein kinase C with chelerethrine potentiated OA-induced apoptosis. OA increased caspase-3 activity, and this effect was reduced by NE. Thus, inhibition of PP1 stimulates apoptosis in NRVM and stimulation of adrenergic receptors protects against OA-induced apoptosis.

    Notes: The paper presents a formulation and analysis of three and four step least squares algorithms for first order IVPs. The three step algorithm is derived using cubic Lagrangian interpolation, and is found to be third order accurate but only conditionally stable. Fourth order Lagrangian interpolation is used to obtain a four step least squares scheme which is A0-stable but inconsistent.
